So it was you that I saw out there. Right where the pavement ends at Warrior Point and about another 10 miles down the dirt road is where I was working. I saw you each morning and evening as I was going back and forth to Fernley.

To answer your question...no, I didn't air down. It never even crossed my mind. This was actually my first time in my life being stuck and a feeling of mild panic came over me. No cell service and no one around the whole time digging out. I didn't even engage the front axle because I had this vision of the front tires losing traction and digging in like the rear tires...so I just dug...and dug...and dug.

Dude, if you had engaged the front, you might have just driven right out like nothing.

That's what 4wd is for. Drive in 2wd until you get stuck, engage 4x4 and drive out.

When I was a teenager growing up in San Bernardino, I had dirt bikes and VW's. One baja bug had a full roll cage, triple shocks, and a type 4 VW engine, dual Webers, with a beefy transmission to match. It's not important to this story if you don't know anything about VW mods. I did a lot of off-roading.

One night my buddy Jim and I were in Crestline, CA. It was midnight, snow on the ground and we'd been drinking, as always back then. Over confident, I took a dirt road I knew, but it was covered in snow, we promptly got stuck 100 feet from the road, in the dark, drunk. We walked to a bar just before last call and recruited another drunk guy who we didn't know with a Willy's 4x4. Very good old truck. He was confident he could pull us out. Off we went.

Long story short, he ended up stuck into the back of my car on a hill of snow. He went nuts, pulled out a gun and started waving it around. Scared the hell out of us. We thought we were going to get shot. His buddy calmed him down but he continued to threaten.

Next day, in San Bernardino, I recruited a friend with a Chevy 4x4 p/u to tow me out. We went up to Crestline, after leaving both vehicles there over night. When we were trying to get my car out, a friend of the Willy's driver showed up to retrieve the 4x4. He was nervous, which made us nervous. He was apologetic for his friend and assured us it was out of line. His friend was too worried to come get his own truck.

We all got out relatively easy in the daylight.

Scary stuck story.

..... it's a long story. Ft Walton beach, Emerald Coast of Florida. Alchohol was involved. Winched up to a pickup (had to park it sideways and hook to the frame, otherwise... was just dragging it towards me) : )

Wow, how did *that* happen, Veg Head? How did you get out?

As some of you know, I sometimes like to go on solo adventures with the van. This is *exactly* my nightmare situation -- getting stuck like that on some soft-sand beach a few days' walk from any other human being. If I notice all 4 wheels spinning, I stop! ...and try backing down my tire tracks. If that doesn't work, I panic. Or, try not to panic, but there's definitely some adrenaline pumping through my system as I get out, let almost all the air out of my tires, dig out larger tire trenches, and find some wood or branches for traction. So far I haven't had to walk home.
