I take 395 instead of I-5 when heading Seattle <--> Mexico whenever possible. Much more pleasant.

I don't see what's weird. That road goes through some of the most dramatic and beautiful areas of our country. I've driven it over 100 times in the last many years. I can never wait to return. I'm surprised you haven't sen my SMB there...

besides, there's those great chiles and peppers at Schwabs.

Yes it's a dramatic and beautiful area.. but I think in the grand scheme of things, thats a small part of the USA and.. i just find it funny that most SMB's seem to be found on that road. That's all im saying.

Scenery like this is a big reason!

The eastern escarpment of the Sierra is just amazing. One could spend a lifetime exploring the Sierra and the Whites (range to the east).

Re: Why is the 395 so popular for SMB sightings?

I never realized the beauty of 395 until I returned from a trip to Colorado (from home in Ca) and traveled throughout Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. Mind everyone I never sought out all the premium spots in every state I visited, but when I returned to travel back through highway 120 and 395 I was amassed what’s here in California. OK 395 is not 120 or 108, but upon returning from the mid west, I truly saw the beauty of 395 during early July. When my buddy in Colorado (who is from my town and has backpacked with me in out youths) came back to visit me he agreed that the Sierra Nevada’s kick ass.
Sorry 395, I always took you for granted. Never again; the perfect SMB main vein route.

Good Lord what a picture. Lundy? Is that where the Indian on the rock is? I'll have to look through my archives.
Dave.
