2010 Forum Rally!

Scheduling Now... personally I would like to see Glacier in late July for the all forum Rally. It was our second in the 2009 discussion (well out of 2 Moab and 2 Glacier choices ). Questions, suggestions, alternatives and volunteers! Will update as things are planned.

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

Late July is a good time for Glacier; past most of the bugs but before the worst of fire season. This year is also Glacier's 100th anniversary having been signed into law as a national park by President Taft (with the urging of former president Theodore Roosevelt) in May, 1910.

I can help with some ideas, but I will be in the northern Yukon at that time.

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

Here's some preliminary ideas. Start with reserving the group campsites at Big Creek Campground on the North Fork Flathead Wild and Scenic River on the Flathead National Forest. This can be done six months ahead of time on ReserveAmerica, I think.

Big Creek Campground is very pretty, and can be used as a base to do the tourista things in central Glacier, like Going to the Sun Road. Then you can move north to explore more of the North Fork Valley, visiting the giant fiord-like lakes at Bowman and Kintla in the park, or backcountry camping on the Forest Service side of the river. There are a couple of nice scenic rough roads over the Whitefish Range, like Trail Creek or Red Meadow Creek that are fun to drive.

Leaving the North Fork, you can go down to the even more remote South Fork Flathead south of Hungry Horse Reservoir, at the edge of the Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness areas. There are several places to camp with good fishing along the South Fork Flathead Wild and Scenic River.

For those needing more road driving, you can do a circumnavigation of Glacier Park, driving up the eastside in Canada and visiting Waterton National Park, and returning through Fernie, British Columbia and the Elk River back to the westside of Glacier.

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

Fantastic suggestion. We will be there with bells on. We were already planning a trip through there this summer and head north from there. Please let me know how we can help.

Wow. This sounds great. I'll have to bring it up my co-pilot.

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

This sounds wonderful. Would love to be there. Haven't been to Glacier since I was ten years old, more than 40 years ago. Unfortunately I am going to the National Boy Scout Jamboree and don't think I can get away from work for almost two months if I add this trip. Guess I'll have to wait until the 2011 rally. Have fun!

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

Sounds great, and we are always game for another forum rally, building on last years moab momentum. We will be there IF our Alaska trip gets put on hold or we are able to play around with the dates, but we are planning on being up there at the time. The Alaska trip is all hinging on our old chocolate labs health at the time. I hope we can make it to the rally either way to meet some new friends and catch up with some of you guys that made it to Moab.

Jage,

Sounds wonderful. I have penciled it in for now. I will let you know when I can ink it in on the calendar.

Re: 2010 Forum Rally!

Is this the last week and weekend of July? We will pencil it in. July is tough for my co-pilot as that is fiscal year end for Microsoft.

Dang, wish I could make it West for that. Sounds fun. Too bad it doesn't work to do a full rally here in the East. (Though, you gotta admit a SMB rally in Central Park wouldn't really be the same...not to mention how much it would stress Homeland Security.)
