Jetzt scrollen, Naturliebhaber!
For all of you interested in nature pictures and landscape this is the scroll through section. Amidst our journey the overland expo west took place. Some time ago they thought they are the biggest overland/offroad expo. They are not! As “Abenteuer Allrad” in Germany is. But as we all should know it is not always the size that matters. However as a regular visitor of the german version I was eager visiting the US venue. So already months ago I got in contact with John @TontoTrails. He told me he would be there too. Not exhibiting but just for fun. He advised me to get in contact with Sportsmobile as I wanted to stay round their booth camping. This is always a huge gathering of sportsmobiles from all over the US. Quite special for me as we are so few in Europe and a chance to meet guys and girls from the sportsmobileforum.com. It worked out. We got our place reserved. And I had the chance to get to know the bosses of sportsmobile and many others.
The event itself was interesting. It is not as professional big and perfect as in Germany. But you get closer to the exhibitors in their smaller booths and it was a more familiar atmosphere. Hard to compare but in the end I think I prefer the overland expo. … Just not so easy to return to every year anew. Now the loads of pictures. Go scroll, natureheads!

Our intention was to go south from Flagstaff to the southern Arizona region. But weather forecast said it would be very hot down there and Timur was still or again suffering from his ear disease. In Flagstaff we had to visit the doctors again. So we changed plans to go westwards. But we wanted to see the Sedona area. Instead of going the tarmac road we chose to go down the 20 miles or so Schnebly Hills (this is really the name – sounds funny in german) dirtroad. Whereas the first miles were good it road turned very bumpy and rutted short after. We had to go slow with our huge van. At some places there were steps. And the pink jeeps transporting tourists up there stopped to see if we would make it, what we sure did. In the end a very scenic trip which took us more than 3 hours.

Sedona selbst?
Sedona itself? Whilest the landscape around is splendid the city itself gave me kind of an artificial impression. Existing for the tourist crowds. This might be false as we just caught a short glimpse of it before heading north and east again. On tarmac this time.
Wo immer man politisch stehen mag ...
From Flagstaff we drive west on the I-40. This Interstate is in a horrible condition. We were happy to drive US HayVan having big tires and an offroad suspension. The very same day after Schnebly Hill road and Sedona we made it until Kingman on a campground. Having made our meals the evening the next morning we went to a diner on “historic” route 66. Quite nice. I just do not get this Killary and communism thing. Wherever you might stand politically … Hillary C. is an ocean away from being a communist. But what does it say about people advertising such kind of utter sonsense?
After this experience we leave Kingman AZ in southwestern direction to Oatman. A place for our baby boy where lots of donkeys walk around on the streets of this little “ghosttown that refuses to die” as they say.

There were very strong winds and we barely made it to Red Rock Canyon State Park next to the town of Mojave. The night was very windy too. After a while it was: Big top down!
Arife wanted to see the huge trees of Sequoia National Park. So we went to the little town next to the park entrance called Three Rivers. There we stayed on a nice campground. Nice but overpriced. In the end we just made it up to the park half way. We had thought Timurs ears were fine. Well .. obviously they were not. He started to cry in pain. So we instantly turned round and went back down as fast as possible. He felt visibly bad for a time but then it got better quickly. The evening we were invited in a marshmellow roasting by friendly Asian americans.
Also, ab dahin!
After all we were a little disappointed. We could not see the huge trees. For me it was the 2nd failing attempt. 17 years ago I was there with a friend but half way up we had to turn around because of to much snow. It somehow is not meant to be.
Long before I had posted about our trip in the sportsmobileforum.com Ray – who I never talked with before – invited us in case we would come to San Francisco. That time I replied that we would not go that far northwest. As we had planned to go south. But now we had changed our plans and I got in contact with Ray. He insisted that we should come to S.F. and stay in their house. It would be fun. A skype conversation convinced us (and probably them vice versa) that there are not some creepy figures on the other side.
So we headed northwest. But not directly to SF. I did not abandon the big trees yet. Googeling I found the Henry Cowell Redwood Statepark next to Santa Cruz. So this is where we went.
