if you make it to the Swell, don't miss Goblin Valley, cool little stop. Pretty trippy rock formations.....

Jage,
Not sure about that road, but there are numerous roads off of I 70 on the swell that allow you to get away from the hwy and you can camp nearly anywhere out there as it is BLM. There will be snow up there right now though, possibly feet.
As long as it is below freezing the dirt roads should be drivable. If it's above freezing that soil turns to buttered duck shit!

Well we got back Sunday night while some of the others carried on with the adventure. Is all I can say is that was some awesome gathering. I'm sure there will be an extensive posting on the entire trip. In the mean time here's a teaser shot.

The Death Valley National Park Morning Report is showing a lot of closed backcountry roads due to snow, ice and rockslides. It looks like Saline Valley, both north and south entrances are closed, part of Titus Canyon and the Butte Valley.

How were the backcountry road conditions?

All 4x4, this picture was taken at the geological cabin in Butte Valley by Striped Butte. If you look at mountains behind you can see a little snow. All the roads were great as was the weather.

Unfortunately we missed this trip. I was involved in the search for the missing hiker, in Green Valley, CA over the weekend.

Hopefully next time things will pan out and we can partake in the fun!

Was your SMB your base of operations/search vehicle? Hopefully it was a succesful search, and not a recovery.

The Park service always "closes" the Saline roads after the 1st good storm of the season. This tends to release them from liability of stranded motorists.

Can't wait to see the pics and writeups!
