OK, I hereby volounteer to organize and lead
The First Annual SportsmobileForum Winter Desert Roundup to some wonderful locations in eastern California. Sorry, there won't be any horses on the trip, but we may see some. Some of you know I visit these areas often and have posted pics of my rig in these locations. I'm sure a few are familiar with these areas and have been there before. I will pick beautiful destinations that a group of vans can camp within, but you don't have to stay that close to the group if you desire more privacy. I can even hold a digital photography class!
My first thought is to make it a 3 to 4 day trek, but we can go longer or shorter. You can do part of it if time restricts you.
Destinations include:
1. Some of my favorite remote locations in Death Valley. Maybe two or three nights there if you show enough interest.
2. A visit to a "real" old mining town in the Inyo Mountains, which is generally near Lone Pine, CA. This can be an overnighter. (may not be available due to excessive snow)
3. The Alabama Hills, east of the Sierra Nevada. A camping night there.
4. The Buttermilk hills area, west of Bishop, CA, in the Sierra foothills. A camping night there.
We will NOT be staying in any campgrounds or RV areas. Some call it boondocking. I call it nice peaceful living. We can stop for meals and showers along the route. We can do a variety of four wheelin' at different degrees of difficulty, as the group feels comfortable with.
I'd like to base the trip around the weekend of
January 12 & 13, 2008, with extra days either before or after (or both). I need to hear from those interested if this date is good. There is some flexibility, as we don't require reservations anywhere. Isn't that nice! I think that any SMB will make it to most of these places even if 2WD.
So, if you're interested, post your replies here. You can also email me for other matters or suggestions concerning this event.
Let's hit the road!!
