Re: A place to be on May 20th 2012

Baker and the GBNP are on the east flank of Wheeler Peak. Early evening sun could be behind the mountain. Might be better viewing if you drive a few miles east into Utah or west on Hwy 50 over Sacramento Pass toward Majors Place.

We ended up at home and had a cloud partially obscure the sun at zero time (still made for great viewing). Turned to look at the house just before the cloud moved in and discovered these images. (Zoom in for shadow details.)

That's cool! The leaves acted like an aperature and projected the shadow like a pinhole camera.

That was a suggested method of viewing without needing any equipment or eye protection.

Kinda cool.

Re: A place to be on May 20th 2012

My wife and I intended to drive up to Utah so we could get the full effect of the eclipse, but we were unable to do so. Instead we viewed it from our front yard where we were able to see 97% of the ring of fire. That was certainly impressive. I knew the daylight would get darker, but I never thought about the temperature actually decreasing. I wish I had checked the thermometer before, during and after the eclipse.

Now we want to watch the transit of Venus across the face of the sun on June 5-6th. We probably will need to find some with a good telescope to see that.

A place to be on May 20th 2012

This is what I was able to get at Expo with the help of a very nice sun telescope.
