Re: Alaska 2014

All aboard, almost 2 months on the road, that would be more than any grandparent would want to take on, even as awesome as Lake is.....

Anyone else headed up have young kids joining?(Lake is 6)

Re: Alaska 2014

Lake has been on earlier SMB adventures. First time I met him was ~3 years ago at Toroweap and it was his birthday. Wish my grandkids were as well behaved as Lake is.

Thanks Mike! I may be biased, but he is quite the super trooper.
Looking forward to our Alaska adventures! And meeting up with some of you along the way, I hope we can work something out with our schedules to be able to meet in Denali or elsewhere...anyone else have any updates?

Re: Alaska 2014

I'm flexible on Denali dates. You make a reservation, and I will reserve the same dates.

Oh, I'm flexible on all dates. I hate schedules, might as well be at work!

Re: Alaska 2014

Mike, Dave and anyone else- I have edited my post on the previous page with our potential schedule of where we'll be when, just a recap for our potential meet up in Denali so that it works for others(and for us to avoid going back and forth from Anchorage)
We will be in Denali with family at a lodge/campground July 1st-5th(Arial tour included!)
We will stay up there to meet up with you guys at TEK between July 5th-8th (night of the 5th, 6th, 7th) if that works
If anyone wants to join us at whatever lodge/campground we are staying at in Denali the 1st-5th, more than welcome before relocating. We'll be partying with mother-in-law and her brother over from England
We'll then head back down to Anchorage and Kenai.

Tequila!

Re: Alaska 2014

Just made my Denali reservations - TEK campground arrive Jul 5, leave Jul 8, and a TEK pass for the bus with a reserved seat on the 2:10 bus at TEK campground.

I've never made a reservation this far in advance. Kinda scary.

Re: Alaska 2014

Mike, we'll be doing the same shortly. Way to take charge! What bus tour did you go with, there are 4 options, plus the shuttle and courtesy and I imagine we'll be doing a tour with the fam from one of the lodges. Also, I did not see an option for a group site at TEK, but did see a max of 8 per site, not sure how many rigs we can fit in each though. Should we all get our own or try to see if there is a group option, maybe reserve one of the over 40ft RV spots so we can all fit? We'll have our trailer which puts us at around 31' or is the campground small enough that we can just walk to other sites. Just to put it out there, we'll be tied to staying at our site once Lake goes to bed, you can all come and hang with us!

Re: Alaska 2014

Get the TEK pass for the bus. One for each of you. That lets you ride on any shuttle bus that has space for the price of one shuttle bus ride. For every day you are there! Last time we spent 3 days on the shuttles - out, hiking, sightseeing, return, repeat, repeat. Just too much to see.

The TEK pass did not show up as an option until after I put the Tek campground in my cart. Or you can phone in your reservation and let them figure it out.

The Teklanika campground does not have assigned camping (at least, did not when I was last there). If we are arriving on the same day, we should try and meet up at the visitor center and drive in together. That campground is so quiet (once camped you cannot move your vehicle until you leave) that I would be uncomfortable driving around trying to find another SMB. At the same time, it wouldn't bother me to have to walk a quarter mile to a common site if we (and others) weren't camped together.

Re: Alaska 2014

We reserved Riley Creek campground (at Denali entrance) for night of July1, TEK nights of 2,3,4,5,6,7, and Riley again night of July 8. The nights at Riley will let us get caught up on email and also allow us more time for stops and hikes on the way into and out of TEK. We will get the TEK pass, but our reservation will be an earlier date than yours, Mike.
