Baja trip report with lots of pictures

I wrote this up in 2007 over on Expedition Portal. It's a pretty good thread and it covers a lot of ground. Plus, check out my old 1969 Econoline van with a pop-top! I tried to be funny but I'm the only one who laughs.

Re: Baja trip report with lots of pictures

Nice write up. I got a buddy that lives down on the shore of the Sea Of Cortez who keeps wanting me to come down there. Now at least I have an idea of what it's like.

Re: Baja trip report with lots of pictures

Thanks guys!

Dave, you really should go down there and visit your friend. San Felipe is pretty cool, but in my opinion, the whole place just gets better as you head south. Conception Bay is outstanding with plenty of beaches you can camp on. With a 4x4 van, the camping is that much better.

Re: Baja trip report with lots of pictures

Yeah, Twogone has floated the idea and he's been introduced to my buddy JD. But JD just came back and told me it was 100+ down there. Marc may like that hot weather but I steer clear of it.

I don't care if it's in the 70's provided it isn't like 90% humidity. What is the best time of year to avoid that? JD claims March is a good time to go but even the deserts up here are almost too warm. For what ever reason I always think of Mexico as hot.

The best time to go is from mid-October to May. The farther south you go, the warmer it gets. There seems to be more precipitation in northern Baja than southern California, so rain storms and snow storms (in the mountains) aren't uncommon.

March is a great time to go whale watching. November has a lot of Baja 1000 race traffic as everybody is prerunning, but the race is the weekend before Thanksgiving.

There is so much to see. I like to spend a lot of time exploring/driving down there. Baja is the new "Land Of The Free", while the USA is now the "Land Of Litigation"! lol

Re: Baja trip report with lots of pictures

Yeah my buddy JD showed me some pics of the whales like you're saying. I'd like to go when it cold and miserable myself...if that happens down there. But it would be nice to do some fishing. BSMB I was a 2-3 time a week bass fishing nut. Love to fish!
