Not sure where Bill took people last year. This year we did one day on the sand and one that was up a narrower trail that ended in a section with some decent rocks. I would not want to have a Sprinter on that one but it may have been doable. I assume Bill chooses routes based on the vehicles in each class?

Alan, Nick, Brian and Will from SMB West brought one Sprinter and Alan's Ford. Gordon had the other Sprinter. We did some rocky canyon on day one and then over to the dunes in the Badlands the next 2 days. Lots of fun. Sprinters were both 144 low roofs with penthouses.

The angle of departure will be low, meaning the tail will drag as you start up and come off of hills. The long WB will hit bottom on center when you go over crests. The dual wheels can get baseball sized rocks jammed between them that cause blowouts unless you are vigilant. Building out such a long vehicle will make it quite heavy. I haven't heard of any upfitters who typically make/install skid plates and suspension upgrades for this vehicle and with the extra weight not being compensated for with upgraded suspension, handling will not be as good. The 4x4 would help in snow and regularly graded dirt or gravel roads, but IMHO, this would not be a vehicle for off road use.

I know in the past, Bill has taken groups up Sheep Canyon, at least for his regular classes. Not sure about van-centric classes.

Tomh, Are you saying you would not take a sprinter 170 4x4 (3500) off asphalt at all? I have seen some on gravel and cleared fire roads. Not many but some. Thoughts?
