planning on buying a Sprinter 170 EB (the 24' long one) 4x4 dually (3500) in the future.
and i assume they were 144 4x4 Sprinters? (the shortest ones) that did the course last year?

The angle of departure will be low, meaning the tail will drag as you start up and come off of hills. The long WB will hit bottom on center when you go over crests. The dual wheels can get baseball sized rocks jammed between them that cause blowouts unless you are vigilant. Building out such a long vehicle will make it quite heavy. I haven't heard of any upfitters who typically make/install skid plates and suspension upgrades for this vehicle and with the extra weight not being compensated for with upgraded suspension, handling will not be as good. The 4x4 would help in snow and regularly graded dirt or gravel roads, but IMHO, this would not be a vehicle for off road use.
