CA Northcoast trip

Hello,

My wife and I will be traveling from Fresno CA back to Portland OR from June 5th - June 10th. We are having a (Sportsmobile) pop-top added to our 2009 Quadvan and plan to do some camping on the way back. We are interested in seeing the north coast redwoods area; wondering of anyone has suggestions for camping a bit out of the way? $35/night fee at the National Park is not especially attractive.

Thanks,
DJM

Re: CA Northcoast trip

Just a couple of other ideas and these are south of the other suggestions. Gaulala River Sonoma County Regional parks campground on Coast Hwy 1(easy first night stop from Fresno). About an hour from Santa Rosa. Usal River (Google Earth it) campground north of Ft. Bragg also off Hwy 1. Both should be good on a week day. No fee and no amenities at Usal. Gualala is $15 per night. Check the Sonoma County Regional Parks website. Another spot is the campground at the mouth of the Mattole River in Humboldt County. It's a drive to get there off 101 but a very beautiful drive. I don't think I paid a fee there. There are only 13 spaces right on the beach. It gets windy but we liked it. From there the road north takes you to Ferndale (30 miles) and out to 101 south of Eureka. It a very crappy "paved" road. Slow going but gorgeous country.

Re: CA Northcoast trip

By far the best was USAL but Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park was nice as far as CG's go. The major problem with the coast is finding nice boon dock spots. I'm sure some are out there even if you're not looking for something like that.
