Central Ca October 2009 Meet.

OK I'll start off but am wide open. If everyone wants to make it an extended trip with a few runs out of the area, I will probably plan a camp trip between the 17th through the 25th as Halloween is the following Saturday. I planned to be in the Kaiser Wilderness area in October anyway. If anyone wants to meet there I can adjust my dates to fit. All of the trails in the area are quite scenic this time of the year and are almost always open. There are roads that a 2WD vehicle can visit. Picking a central area to base out of would keep fuel usage low as well as time. There are a couple of primitive campgrounds that are usually empty during this time of the season that provide vaulted heads, Sample Meadows:

And Badger:

Neither have water. This area has several spots to boon dock also.
Edison, Florence, Huntington, and Shaver Lakes are all areas that have easy to mild off road trails along with a few OHV routes, Bald Mtn being one. See Backcountry Adventure book. The small town of Shaver is close.

Shaver has diesel and all the necessary food, laundry, propane, good beer etc. Leaving out of the area is a great RR grade (unpaved) road from the town of Big Creek to Auberry. I was also trying to get a friend to set up a tour of one of the power plants in the area for me this year and if the group is interested I can check it out.

Sonora Pass would be a good choice but many of the trails could be closed.
If open Leavitt Lake has great fishing and is also a scenic spot.

There are a few trails in the area and Eagle Meadows area has a few good spots to boon dock at. The main campgrounds (if open) are OK but the lesser known ones are the best is a head is needed. Pinecrest Peak trail is a nice loop. http://trogspace.com/pdf/Pincrest_pe.PDF
Diesel may be difficult to find close by but the store has a few supplies if open. Trails out of Bridgeport are fairly close.

Tioga throughout Yosemite is closed after the 15th of October to camping and those camps are more like a zoo anyway. There are a few trails around Mono Lake and a couple of trails off the 120 entrance area. The Old Coulterville/Yosemite route would be an excellent choice for a quick meet and run out of the area if everyone wants to make it a weekend only meeting. That trail starts in Foresta and ends in the Coulterville area.

Like I said I'm wide open to any suggestions.
Dave.

Re: Central Ca October 2009 Meet.

Just be prepared for some potentially cold weather. I was up in that area doing some non-SMB 4 wheeling early Oct '07 when we had a couple inches of snow, including at Edison Lake (nice facilities for improved campground camping BTW).

daveb, in the first photo it looks like you are warming your propane tank over the wood fire.

Now that's cold!

Ed, that's my buddy Don. We figured it was cold when the water bottle started freezing right in front of us. But it was such a dry cold it didn't feel that bad plus it was only about 15 degrees, probably balmy for you

Re: Central Ca October 2009 Meet.

I am watching this thread with interest, and hoping to participate as the time grows nearer. By October, SMBw should be done with the first part of my ersatz semi-SportsMobile conversion.

My rig is an 06 Sprinter, so I look forward to offering comic relief on 4X4 runs. I also make a mean guacamole.

Thanks,

Esmi

We would definitely want to participate! Are the dates set yet?

Re: Central Ca October 2009 Meet.

I plan to be there the week before what Jage set the greeting date is, the 17th -25th. I'm always there the last week of October as a rule. The area will usually close on Nov 1st which is normal. This area is great because there is a variety of roads from super nice narrow paved roads to some medium duty OHV Jeep trails, so there is something for everyone. Best to have chains though. It would be great to have some sprinters there so they do some stuff together if the off road trails are a bit rough.

BTW I am also open to other ideas and can adjust.

We won't be able to be there long but the plan is now we will arrive Friday, the 23rd, around noon and leave Sunday.
