Re: Death Valley starting 1-12-14

Nice trip report. Brought memories of our last SMB group run to Striped Butte and beyond. Mengel Pass looks about the same. Going up or down it had serious pucker factor for me. We had 6 vans going in from Panamint via the Slate Range Trail over Goler Wash. When we got to the waterfall it had been back filled and graded to the point it was 2wd doable. In the trip before that chronicled on video by Woody aka woodbee Charlie56 had to winch Tapatio up the waterfall.....I think it was Tapatio! The geologist cabin has been turned into something almost unpleasant. It appears to now have maid service! Did you stop at Warm Springs? In closing it was nice to meet you in Borrego. Hope we meet again. Maybe........on your BOAT!

Re: Death Valley starting 1-12-14

We just landed for a couple days before hitting the road again, and I thought I would post some additional photos. Sadly, after spending quite q bit of time composing text and attaching photos, just as I was finishing, my iPad crashed. So, I'll try again later today but for some reason photos are darn hard for me to post. Stay tuned.......

Nice trip and nice pics.
Unfortunately such trips-offroading is nearly impossible over here

Romania is not too faraway from Austria and there is a lot of off-roading possibilities three... ;-)

Sorry but that pisses me off! Why did they grade it???

Hopefully the weather will take care of it once we get the normal weather back one of these days

Re: Death Valley starting 1-12-14

If I well understood, the Goler wash have been severely washed out some months ago in other places then the waterfall. It was impassable for several weeks until it have been graded. They then likely graded the waterfall area too...

Re: Death Valley starting 1-12-14

Mining has resumed in the area and access from Panamint Valley needed to be improved. I suspect the waterfall in Goler Wash washes out periodically no matter what. As for Mengel Pass I doubt it gets graded.

Re: Death Valley starting 1-12-14

Actually, access from Panamint Valley is fine till Barker Ranch, then rougher. Mining activities seem to has resumed in Panamint Valley, not in Goler Wash. Lotus Mine looked really abandonned...
