El Camino Del Diablo

In October 2018 I signed up for a trip to the Copper Canyon area of Mexico. The week before the trip I picked up the van from Agile Offroad after they completed the 4WD conversion. After a being trained on the workings of the conversion I headed for the Douglas, AZ via the Camino Del Diablo and as close to the border as possible. You can read the the entire trip report on my blog,

Approximate route

The first night we camped at Fortuna Pond near Yuma

The next day we got our permits to travel the Camino Del Diablo

Our first stop was the La Fortuna Mine site

Camp that night was at Tule Well. The Border Patrol officer we met said it was safer than Papago Well which gets a lot of illegal immigrant traffic.

The Camino Del Diablo gets pretty deep in some areas.

Papago Well

The desert was in bloom

After we finished the Camino Del Diablo we continued following the border along Duquense Road. Here is our campsite.

We were able to get right next to the border fence is a couple of areas.

From there we crossed the San Rafael Ranch towards the Coronado National Memorial.

Good stuff. Nice to see my old van converted. Were you not able to pop the centers out of the OEM hubcaps and use them on the front?

Thought about it but have not done it. Am thinking I will just paint the stock rims black. It handles great with the 4WD conversion and the Fox shocks. Agile does great work.

Larrie, what size BFG KO2's are you running?
It looks like you've likely got them in a 285/75r16?

Asking because:
BFG has a spec'd minimum/maximum rim width range of 7.5" - 9" for that size of the KO2....and those OEM Ford Econoline steel wheels are only 7" wide.

BFG KO2 Sizes / Specs
https://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/uplo...in-t-a-ko2.pdf

I've wanted to mount the same size KO2's on a set of similar 7" wide OEM Econoline rims, but was told that tire shops would refuse to mount them up for liability reasons.....not sure exactly why it's a problem, as I've seen lots of older photos here on the SMB Forum where guys clearly have those tires (in what must be that size) mounted on the OEM Econoline steel wheels.

They look great on your rig, regardless.
(As does your whole van with the new Agile setup!)

They are KO2s 265/75 R16s, one size up from stock 245/75s. Glad you like the look. I was worried they would look to small after the conversion but they don’t.

The look perfect to me. They would only look small if you had big bumpers, etc. on the van. I think it works well. I actually think it might look pretty good with just the gray steel wheels instead of black, just my opinion.

Does that van have a full float rear? I can't remember.

I like the look too. Do not see a need to go with bigger tires.

Semi float rear. I need to weigh it again. Fully loaded it was 8,200 before the conversion to 4wd. Now it should be closer to 9k. I discussed the full float option with John at Agile and he said that I am well within the weight limit of the semi float so will be fine.

Hey, that's great you didn't have to drop significant amounts of coin for a new full-float rear axle. I'm guessing you also didn't have to re-gear the rear axle, either? 265's seem to work just fine with the original E250 gearing....which is usually 3.73, vs. the 4.10 gear ratio that usually becomes desirable when larger 285's (33") tires get fitted.
