Exploring Old Mines Near Las Vegas

Finally got out on some dirt roads today to explore some more old mines around Las Vegas. Lots to explore. I went on some pretty rough roads and broke my passenger door step. Bummer.

I stay out of vertical shafts

Plenty of mine ruins to explore

This was a fun mine to enter. It was dug in 1913. It went back about a thousand yards and split into many side tunnels and one vertical tunnel going up from the main tunnel.

Looking back toward the entrance

Split into two tunnels

Note the chisel holes

This vertical shaft went straight up from the main tunnel. The beam on the right was about 10 feet above my head.

Another tunnel. This one was too low to walk through, so I stayed out.

Looking down the mountain from some of the mines

In the hills around Goodsprings, Nevada, about 35 miles southwest of Las Vegas. There's a really nice mine in the area that I didn't go to that goes back a long ways. It requires a steep 1+ mile hike that I was not up for yesterday. There also are many mine entrances that were higher up on the hills that I was in that I didn't hike to. I'm sure they are even more interesting as they are so hard to get to they aren't even fenced off.

I finally got to give my locker on my 2WD a real workout. It performed perfectly. I was on some pretty rough and steep roads. Unfortunately, I broke off my passenger step and lost a cap to one of my wheels. But, as they say, that's why we buy these things in the first place so we can take them out on some fun roads and see things that many people don't get to see.
