Good spot between Fresno & LA to avoid Memorial Day masses?

I feel the need to get out for a quick weekend trip, but want to avoid the Memorial Day overcrowding. We'll be meeting friends from Fresno, so any place between LA and Fresno would be good.
Any advice for a peaceful boondock spot where we can sit, eat, drink beer, let the dogs play and go for an occasional short hike? We are 4x4, but don't want to go crazy....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Anette

Closer to Fresno, but above Pine Flat Lake, along Kings River.

There are none. Lot's of people will be everywhere on that holiday. I never leave home on holidays. I have 4x4. I make my own holidays on regular days.

There's plenty of places to get away from the crowds, once you get through traffic leaving town. I'd look at some of daveb's posts on places down that way.. or just head out to the desert.

Ft. Hunter-Ligget has a lot of empty space to get away in.

Carrizo Plain National Monument should also work for you, especially if you have 4wd.

Daytona, thanks for the heads-up. We are scoping that out on the map.

Jeffrey, I totally understand your approach to holidays, and I wish I could follow your example. Unfortunately, hubby and I are still stuck in the hamster wheel of full time work, so we have to take the days off as they come... One day though....

Rally - thanks for that hint. Good stuff to be found there.

Mike - great advice, thank you so much!

Turns out our friends know a few spots along the Kinds River, so we might head up into known territory. Nothing is set in stone yet, though.

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in here

My vote is for Fort Hunter Liggit, Their is camping on the base but its not that great. I'v stayed at one of the two campgrounds on Fergusson Rd. they will fill up by 1:00 Fri usually. Their is boondocking at the summit and along the road to highway !.. This is a incredable drive worth the time. The base itself is huge and worth driving around, theirs usually no exercises going on on holidays. The base allows hunting so their is usually civilian driving around. Dont speed on base! Their is also a campground at the north end of the base you can walk down to a hug swimming hole at this campground(you need to be a mountain goat)also hiking trails.

Liggit is my go to place for short get away trips

Someone maybe a year or so did a write up on Liggit but I could not find it.

Play outside, let us know if you end up on the Kings River and we'll stop by to say hello. We are in Clovis so that's in our back yard.
