Re: Group Photo of the DRV 2013 attendees taken last night..

We catch a few rattlers a year in our back yard as we live on the edge of a canyon. Usually take pictures and relocate them deep into the canyon.

yep, learned this when it happened. they just happen to be doing a class on rattle snake bites when this happened. i ended up being a labrat for them all through the healing process. poloroid pix and 7-8 people crowded around my hand every visit. was pretty interesting honestly. gross for the most part, but interesting.

i was lucky and the little guy only got one tooth in me. was still enough to ruin the first month of snowboarding for me that year though.

i very much appreciate this mindset. thank you

its sad to see how many people kill snakes cause they are scared of or dont like them. and whats funny, its usually people that hate rodents even worse...stupidiots.

We see rattlers on lots of our mt bike rides every year. they like to sprawl out across the singletrack and take a nap. they dont seem to enjoy how they get woke up, lol.

good to hear the scorpion sting was minimal. the one in the pic above is considerably larger than the ones we get around here.

look forward to the other photos

Re: Group Photo of the DRV 2013 attendees taken last night..

A few years ago I stopped along the road near Walker Lake, NV to take a leak. Walked up behind some boulders, did my business and turned around to go back. That's when I saw the big rattler coiled up under the edge of a rock - with my footprint 6" in front of his nose.
The snake never moved or made a sound. Luckily I had just voided my bladder, so I didn't piss my pants. I took an alternate route back to the van.

I know I know. Never again.

Another Tacoma dude came in from the front side of my van to help. He got stuck and started sliding down much like me. The other dudes had to bail him out too. He was pooping bricks.

That right side was mostly loose rocks with soft sand. Almost missed my wife's bday celebration.

My wife says I have a patented rattler squawk--I usually follow her on the trail, she wakes them up and I jump over them. :-)

We unfortunately missed the group photo b/c our little one was being fussy. But it was a good experience as his first camping trip at four months old. He was smiling all the way in on the washboarded road.

Ocsmb, sorry didn't get a chance to meet/say hi. We left early Sunday once the wind/dust really started picking up.

Re: Group Photo of the DRV 2013 attendees taken last night..

Great trip! You guys missed the 4 mile hike to see the old jet crash debris in 90+ degrees heat. The road was allegedly closed but as we arrived at the crash site 2 miles in there were 15 or so off-road UTVs....yeah I guess the road wasn't so closed. Those folks looked at us like we were insane. The exercise was great so no worries.

People were complaining about the wind and dust storm Saturday night and Sunday morning but I slept right through it all in the hard top. What wind? I guess some awnings and tents were toast.

We need to get out soon again. Thinking a Burro Schmidt Tunnel camp out might be in order.
