There are several campgrounds between Mormon Lake and Flagstaff. There is tons of dispersed camping in the Coconino Nat. Forest as well. Especially south of Mormon Lake.

As for Flagstaff, it is mostly what you might expect from a western mountain town. A bit more gritty than mountain towns in Colorado perhaps with a strip mall type entrance from I17 but there's lots of historic stuff to check out. College town as well and historic downtown will be hopping on a Fri and Sat night. There are now 5 or 6 micro-breweries; I've lost count. Riordan Ranch is worth a visit. Check out the Museum of N. Arizona. Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater Nat. Monuments are definitely worth a visit. There's a big hole in the ground 90 min away as well.

We are heading out there early Thursday morning from SF bay area if anyone wants to caravan maybe?

Just found out two days ago that my wife has uterine cancer and needs a hysterectomy asap which is scheduled for the 27th. We're really going to miss the event and chance to see everyone. My wife spent a great deal of time planning, mapping, etc.....
Goes to show you how valuable time really is and why taking these trips is so worthwhile. Hope you all enjoy it and we can catch up with you another time!

That sucks big time I hope everything goes well with hysterectomy and she'll be back to normal soon!!! there is always next year

We'll arrive Friday, probably camping along the fence line on the north edge of the area. Knock if you walk by. We haven't decided where to camp before then but probably at one of the two USFS sites on the road north of Mormon Lake if we don't boondock. Our campsites usually look like this (without the trees in the Mormon Lake context):

Zuni Mtns. Near Gallup, NM. Few people, miles of bike trails. Too many trees for much staReplace gazing, though.

Rionapo and anyone else that likes to pedal on the dirt I'm always up for a ride but won't hike out of my river trip until the 19th. I'll probably hit the expo on Saturday. Safe travels everybody!
