There are numerous state campgrounds along the beach in Oregon. You can't lose in camping there. I wouldn't worry about going to any one specific site. Just travel at your convenience and whim and stop when and where you want.

Try Patrick's Point. Right on the ocean in Northern Calif.

At Ocean Shores you can drive on the beach. Otherwise not much to see.

Cannon Beach has a great beach and a funky little town for walking around. Probably no camping near town.

Newport has Mo's famous chowder on the waterfront at the bay.

Coos Bay is a good place to keep on moving.

Brookings has the best weather.

Ditto Mac's comment on the Oregon State Parks. There a lots of them along the coast. This time of year there should be no problem getting a space because the kids are back in school. One of our favorite campgrounds is Beachside State Park south of Waldport. There are campsite right next to the beach. There are very few places to boondock along the Oregon coast.

Rockaway is a sleepy little town with about seven miles of beach. Tillamook is south of Rockaway. Be sure to stop at the cheese factory and get some ice cream. Lincoln City is large and can be skipped unless you want to stop at the outlet mall. Newport has the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Hatfield Marine Science Center (stop in and pet the octopus) on the south side of the bay. Both have excellent marine exhibits. There is also a brewery near by that has god food. Yahats has several good restaurants. The road between Yahats and Florence goes through the Siuslaw National Forest. There is a lighthouse at Cape Perpetua. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is south of Florence.

So many places. So little time.

Oregon State Parks are generally very well maintained and have semi-private spots IMO for being a public CG. I have stayed at several and the showers are always very clean and nice if that matters to you.

I dont know what your planed stops are but I can recommend the following:

Beachside State Park near Waldport. You can get a spot right on the beach here, but be advised the wind will likely blow pretty good after noon.

Washburne State Park in between Yachats and Florence. This is my fav OSP campground. Its on the east side of 101 about a mile from the beach but there is a nice trail from the cg.

Harris Beach SP in Brookings is also very nice.

If you want to boondock on the central coast, lookup a USFS map and find the 5800 or sometimes referred to as 58 road. It runs parallel to 101 (a few miles over)from Waldport area to just north of Florence. There are tons of side roads and old logging landings that would make good spots. There are several roads that can get you back onto 101 as you go south, namely Big Creek Rd. Tenmile Rd. and the 58 road itself terminates onto 101 as well at the furthest south point.

I am pretty sure that western Oregon will be open season for blacktail deer-rifle during this time. This will increase your odds of running into some very "Cleetus and his three brother's Darrel" running around with guns, at least around here if you do end up boondocking.

Re: HWY 101 South from Canada camping ??

Ron,

If you pass through Seattle and need anything please feel free to look us up. We also have a large level yard and you are welcome to overnight. I can also point you to a great city boondock (if that's possible) spot on Alki Beach in Seattle. We have many friend who live on Alki and have overnighted their many time and never been hassled by the cops.

I don't know any great camping spots along the coast but here are a couple of things to break up the drive.

The Tillamook air museum is really worth hitting if you like vintage military aircraft. The place is huge and you will need 4-6 hours to see everything. It is also near the cheese factory which is worth about an hour.

About 20 miles or so South of Tilamook is the Pelican Pub and Brewer which sits right on the beach. It is a neat spot tucked off he 101 and you could probably camp in their parking lot which is also the beach.

Have a great trip.
