I've departed for Alaska

Our latest trip has started. We departed the San Juan islands for Missoula Montana on Wed. We decided to take the scenic route through Levenworth Wa, a town well known for it's over the top Xmas lights. Once over Stephens pass, we had snow the entire way to Missoula. The first night was spent just off the highway after finding a forest service road into the mountains. The next day we were on our way before sun up (0730hrs in these parts). Since the sun rise was so spectacular, I pulled off the road for a photo, and immediately got stuck for the first time this trip. Fortunately, with a limited slip in the front, as soon as I got one wheel on the pavement we were on our way. Our next stop was at a scenic pull out where we found an Audi stuck in the snow. After pulling him out, we continued on our way and saw a road I wanted to explore, but we saw a sign warning us that there were no further warning signs for the next 3/4 miles, and I chickened out fearing I wouldn't know what to do until the next sign.

After a full day of snow travel we arrived in time to catch my wife's daughter and her Xmas show at a local music venue. Much beer was consumed and I now have too many Xmas songs stuck in my head. Today we woke up to a snow dump, and it's been snowing all day, perfect for a white Xmas. Monday morning I'll depart for Banff and Jasper if the roads are open by then. Merry Xmas all............

That is awesome- You sure started with a bang and it sounds like non stop adventures already! In what band and what venue is your step daughter playing (when you have a chance)?

Wish I had thought of this sooner. There is an App called MyRadar that shows the Next Rad radar from the NOAA weather stations. With it you can see where it is raining, in color, or snowing, as white, what the temperatures are and what the current snowfall accumulation is expected to be. Have found it very useful on cross country trips. There are some stations in Canada as well but the coverage is not as extensive. Alaska radar is mostly along the coast.

Hope you have a safe trip.

Thanks, I've used that App before and find it quite useful. I'm also checking the "Drive BC" website often and tomorrow looks ok. It's been snowing for three days, but it's time to hit the road tommorow. At this point, I'm just going to go for it and deal with what ever comes my way............

She plays with a lot of folks all over Montana, it's how she makes her living. Last was at the Top Hat downtown.
