King of the Hammers
My wife and I decided late in the day Thursday to head out to Johnson Valley and watch the KOH race on Friday morning. We left Carlsbad at 8pm and arrived at the top of the spectator area at "Backdoor" (Rm 1 and the first rock section) just before 11pm. There was a big crowd with several hunderd vehicles there partying so we parked where we could and went to sleep. At 5:30am when I stepped outside to check the tires, there were only four vehicles left on the hill and no one was parked at the very top which was the best spot to see from. I pulled the SMB right up to the barricade and went back to sleep. When we woke back up the hill was packed with hundreds of vehicles and a thousand or more spectators, freezing in the windy cold dusty air.
Warm front row seats, coffee for Jan, oatmeal and a Diet Coke for me and a lot of envious people surrounding us trying to see over each other - I almost felt guilty; not really.
We watched the first two laps from there and then headed over to "Chocolate Thunder" and a couple of other spots. We cruised around the valley and saw thousands of 4-Wheel Drive "Rigs" of every variety and configuration - some really cool, but not one other Sportsmobile.
Was anyone else there? This has to be one of the biggest Off-Road events in the world.
