For sure, the Bar M trails; I've played on that before without significant disaster. What else can you recommend that is for non-biking-Gods, and is used enough that another rider will find my sorry carcass if I go splat?

I've also thought about checking into guided group rides / shuttles out of Moab (trails or into the LaSals); does anyone have any info, pro or con?

I'll probably camp along U-128 in one of the BLM campgrounds, or head up towards Islands in the Sky.

If you haven't done slickrock, do that one.....plenty of folks around to help you out and pretty hard to get lost.....just follow the painted dots on the rocks.

Re: Moab 4x4 trails, Mtn. Bike Trails and Camping?

The countdown is on.....week and half to go and we are headed out.

Been reading over all the suggestions here for the trip and there is lots of great info.

One thing I could use a few more suggestions on is the off roading with van. I read the Hells Revenge suggestion and would like a few more you think the long wheel base hightop would be ok for.

Not looking to challenge the van to it's limits but a few to have a good time on with scenic views. I have been reviewing the 4x4 sites but not many mention the vehicle size and issues it may present. I won't have a lot of time but a few more suggestions would be great if you have any.....

Killer sunset drive out to Hurrah Pass out on Kane Creek rd. Not very challenging and 4wd not really needed. Clearance helps tho

Re: Moab 4x4 trails, Mtn. Bike Trails and Camping?

I did Hell's Revenge Last year on my KTM. It's right next to the Slickrock Trail. In fact it zig-zags through it a little bit and you need to pay attention to the painted dots on the slickrock to figure out which trail you are on. IIRC the brontosaurus dots are Hell's revenge and the round dots are slickrock.

There is a least one or two really steep long rock faces on Hell's Revenge.

The entrance is a bit interesting.....

I suppose if a Crown Vic can do it, the SMB should be no problem.

*There is no way I'd take my van out there, but YMMV

I think a 4x4 van would have no problem taking the Kane Creek Canyon safari route from Kane Springs Rd down to Hole in the Rock. That's a really cool canyon to drive through. Really just one little hill to climb at the end.

Moab 4x4 trails, Mtn. Bike Trails and Camping?

Great time in Moab. Rode Porcupine rim, took a chopper flight and off road tour on Hells Revenge.

Spent the day in Monument Valley and of to Expo in the morning.

I'll try to upload some photos when I get back.

Stayed at the top of Porcupine Rim the night after the ride. There are only two spaces up there but the view is epic. 10 feet from a 1000 ft drop outside the van door. Highly recommend it but very windy.

Love that campsite up on the rim. Spent a bunch of nights up there. Crazy stargazing on clear nights up there

Re: Moab 4x4 trails, Mtn. Bike Trails and Camping?

That's exactly where Nick & I started Porcupine rim as well, since the Hazzard County trail head is still snowed in. our friend's cabin is a few miles from the Kokopelli start point. UPS/LPS is my favorite part of the enchilada, especially the long rock downhill section on UPS.

Did you camp at the PR trail head on sand flats Rd near the watering tanks or up higher?

Well, we missed meeting you again (and a few other forum members) at the Expo, hopefully next trip! (We spotted Brent's van in town)

Awesome TR!

Boywonder, the Expo isn't over. Are you out of there already?

Yup, went yesterday for the day. 37 deg F and rain/snow/hail/wind/mud. Camped at Pine Grove campground off of Lake Mary Rd. about 5 miles from the expo.

Had a good time, met forum members Skyrat, Ujoint and a few others, checked out lots of rigs but I didn't pack much in the way of rain gear.

We ended up riding Slickrock, PR, and Fisher Mesa. Also rode the motorcycle on Fisher Mesa to the end and back, that was fun stuff. I was hoping to get a couple more rides in (like the hangover trail in Sedona); it's highly likely that I'll be heading back to Moab in July.

Nick and I will be posting a few pics of our big adventure soon.
