Re: Moab Planning Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

If anybody is interested, I would be up for a beer at the Moab Brewery Sunday night after the Big truck training and before we have to leave early Monday morning.

On Monday I will be up for sight-seeing but not 4wheeling.

Ed,
Thanks for the info. I also printed out "Where to get a shower in Moab" from the discovermoab.com site.

Hell on Earth!

Whats the story with that old airstrip between Mineral Bottom and Horsethief Bottom (NW White Rim Trail area)? Still used?? That would be some level camping, along the Colorado but a nasty surprise if you woke up with a Cessna in your sleeping bag. Hans? -Found the answer: It IS used.

Hans, I bought the book too!

Thanks for letting me play through.

Re: Moab Planning Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

I didn't put us down on the roll call for the trip. But.. we will be in the area(9th thru the 11th) doing our annual Kokopelli Mtn bike ride from Moab to Fruita. If we are not too wiped we might come back on the 14th to visit if anyone is around.
If you see a dark green EB SMB with bikes all over it, it's us.

Re: Moab Planning Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

To all the participants of the Sportsmobile ForumRally in Moab 5/11-15:

I have been discussing the 4x4 activities for the 5/13 and 5/14 directly with Jeremiah. Here copies of the last 2 e-mails:

Hans,

Thanks! And please feel free to put anything on the forum. I don't really have time to review anything anyway, but regardless you are welcome to post and discuss whatever. You don't ever need approval from me, in fact no one does, unless you're selling stuff.

Feel free to make your Wednesday/Thursday/Friday suggestions over to plans when you post. You're guiding, planning, etc, no reason not to just have it be "the plan". I'm sure people will have tons of questions for you.

Let me know if you need anything from me.

Jeremiah

Jeremiah:

We just got back from running the Dome Plateau trail today. It is about a 50 mile round trip from the Onion Creek Camp. We stopped at the camp at sunset on the way home. I am attaching you some pictures. The location of the camp is sensational. The camp itself is okay. Depending on how many rigs we might have to park some of them a long the road (2140). It only has one table and fire ring (2138). On the way out I took a picture of the latrine (2141). We will make it work. Don't worry if you have more then the permitted rigs as there are many individual sites up the creek, but porta potties are required.

The weather being overcast and the desert in bloom it was a perfect day for the Dome Plateau prerun. The trail is rated moderate as well as easy and will be fun for all the 4x4 SMB's. We had lunch at the greatest overlook with a view of the Colorado River, Onion Creek with the camp and Professor Valley way below the rim. The snow covered LaSals as a back drop. I will be able to show you ranching and mining remnants as well as great rock formations with several arches. I have led this trip several years for the Easter Jeep Safari. I suggest that we run this trip on Thursday 5/14.

I plan to prerun the circular Onion Creek, Thompson Canyon and Polar Mesa trails before the rally. Polar Mesa is high up at 8000ft and I want to let the trail dry up a few days and then decide on the best way to run the trip on Wednesday 5/13.

Both these trails will be all day outings.

On Tuesday 5/12 when leaving the Dead Horse camp site to return to Moab I suggest for the 4x4's either Gemini Bridges, Long Canyon or the Shafer Trail.
This could be decided the evening before in camp.

I did not want to put the above on the forum without your approval. Please feel free to do so.

Hans

So if any of you have comments, questions or further suggestions regarding this plan please let me know.

We just had a storm blow through Moab and bringing snow to the LaSals... So THINK SPRING.

Hans

I would like to do Shafer Trail if possible. However I am arriving on 5/12 late or 5/13 so it may be back tracking for those of you that arrive earlier. I will want to check out Dead Horse State Park too.

For Communications:

For CB, I suggest we use Channel 16, like we did in Death Valley.

For HAM Radio I suggest we monitor 146.520 (simplex) unless anyone knows of a local repeater. Anyone in addition to Angel and me that have 2M Ham radios?

Also I suggest we all share cell phone numbers. If someone can cooridinate we can PM our name/number to you.

thanks. Looking forward to coming.

Re: Moab Planning Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

Thanks Bronco hauler for posting the Moab Brewery site.

I will try to camp at canyonland campground. It looks like it is within walking distance of the Brewery. See you there, Ed and Skywagon and whoever else makes it, Sun, May 10th.

A few more hours till countdown and lift off towards Moab.
