Moab winter trips

Over the past few weeks we have made a couple of trips to the Moab area. We have enjoyed many days of beautiful scenery and best of all, solitude. This is the off season so the area is deserted, even more so right now because of frigid temps and the copious amount of snow across the region. We spent a few days and nights up in the La Sal mtns as well as Dead Horse State Park.
The SMB makes the winter camping enjoyable for sure!

Re: Moab winter trips

I love the winter pics!
How does the PH top hold up with the weight of snow up there?
Funny looking deer, are they a local kind?

The penthouse held up fine with the added weight. If we were going to stay any longer I would have cleared it off. Also of note, we used Reflectex insulation around the inside of the penthouse and it worked well. Condensation was our only problem, even with the windows cracked a bit.

The deer are mule deer, common in the western US. These were rather small.

Re: Moab winter trips

Beautiful pictures. I love winter camping/backpacking. It is difficult to get a more serene environment.

Great pics Saline! I'm way overdue for a good trip ..... The weekend runs to the mountains just aren't cutting it, but better than nothing.

Re: Moab winter trips

Great photos! What were your temps during the day and night?

It's been too dang cold to winter camp up here in Big Sky Country lately.

Re: Moab winter trips

Wow, great pics and report, thanks.

We did our first winter camping in sub-freezing temps this past weekend. A great experience!

The suburban heater in combination with a honda eu2000 generator is an outstanding combo for a warm night's sleep.

Great winter pics!
I love the area around Moab but we haven't done it in snow.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks for the comments!
It was fairly cold ( probably not by your standards) about 30 deg. during the day and about 16 deg. at night.

A few weeks ago we had a big inversion all across western CO and SE Utah. The valleys, including Moab were around -10 at night and only in the teens during the day. It was nice to be up at 9600ft in the La Sal's above the inversion. The days were warm, sunny and the coldest it got was 19 degrees!

A couple more pics:
