Re: Nevada Ghost and Mining Town Trip - 11/25-26/2011

Mac, Goldfield was on our way to see you down there. We got stuck in a traffic jam there. The highway was backed up all the way through town. Then I lost my brakes
I've been to a few others you did in this great write up. Nice job.

Been here yet?

I have been there Dave and had several out of body experiences , I once awoke to the sound of soft buzzing in a Sand Wash with all exposed parts of my anatomy badly sunburned ! Really is a fascinating place , primarily because of the people who mystically are drawn to the location and reasons that they are there . Mac have you checked out Reveille I believe it is in Tonapah county and supposed to be a great place for exploring and photography

Mac - finally got a chance to read through your trip report. Very cool! Very interesting to think about all the history in those places that have been abandoned.

On a side note, I REALLY like the way your van is sitting now. I kind of forgot how urban it looked before. Did you take much of a mileage hit with the bigger tires?

Re: Nevada Ghost and Mining Town Trip - 11/25-26/2011

daveb: I haven't been to Rachel, Nevada, yet. That's my next trip. I could pick up about 500 geocaches along that road, but it slows me down too much. Now that I have an SMB I just want to head out on the back roads.

Greggd: I haven't checked out Reveille yet. But it's now on my list. Thanks.

rockbender: I think I'm getting about 1.5 miles less per gallon with my lift and bigger tires. I get between 11.5 and 12 miles per gallon on average now. I don't know if that is good or bad, normal or not normal.

Mac,

Is the speedo recalibrated for the tires?

No. My speedometer now is off by 3 miles. It shows I'm going 3 mph faster than I'm actually going.

How do you adjust for that when you calculate MPG's?

Beats the heck out of me. Mike, you know me, I just guess. Actually, every time I get gas I push my trip odometer and divide number of miles traveled since my last fill by the gallons of gas I put in. Consequently, if anything is wrong in that equation the results are wrong. Suggestions?

It's not a Prius, where people get excited about getting 42.31 MPG versus 41.97 MPG. It's a big brick with wheels underneath.

The only value I see in tracking mileage is as a potential indicator of something wrong (e.g. a sudden drop in MPG). For that, only the difference in MPGs is important, and as long as your assumptions are consistant, there shouldn't be any problem in not recalibrating your equations to account for a permanent change you made to your SMB.

Mac,

The basis for my question wasn't about your mileage, but really about you said you lost 1.5mpg from the lift and wheels/tires. I'm curious if your actual mileage change was more or less than that.
