New Years SoCAL Trip Suggestions...?

Hi Everyone,

As "helpful" as all the campsite reservation sites are, I am looking for more. My family and I decided it would be nice to get out of town (San Diego) for a New Years camp trip. Weather wont stop the Van, so anything is fair game. but it seems like a lot of the sites are closed?

Where CAN we go? Recommendations or insight?

Thanks.

We're in San Diego as well and have done Sedona, Zion, Bryce, Moab and a few others. Think ours were typically around Thanksgiving so not sure if the extra month will cause some sites to be closed or not. On my list is to hit the Santa Fe/Taos area of New Mexico.

Last year my wife and I spent the time in between Christmas in New years camping in Mono Lake, Alabama Hills and Death Valley. If you can handle the cold, it was an awesome trip.

Year before we spent it out in the Mojave Desert. Again, it was cold, but barely any people out and about.

Not sure if you are looking to boondock or not, but the above places have virtually unlimited free camping.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies guys. A couple of things.
1. Not worried about the cold
2. Was thinking somewhere 3 hours or so from San Diego...
3. Also, was hoping for trees, less desert. I am desert'd out right now

Thanks for the suggestions though!

bemerritt - that is exactly what I want! Some Yellow Post in Idyllwild, Big Bear, San Jacinto, but it seems like everything will be locked up and closed for Winter.

Idyllwild Dispersed Camping (Yellow Post)

Black Mountain
Boulder Basin Idyllwild Camps
Santa Rosa Mountain
Thomas Mountain
Tool Box Springs
Toro Peak

Yellow Post Campsites – Total Escape

There all great.
Torro Peak (8,717 ft) has the best view by dirt road in SoCal.
I doubt they're all closed, there's no snow as of yet. Toro peak has never been closed even with a foot of snow at the bottom of the Mt.
