NorCal coast suggestions

I'm heading north in hopes of making it rain. Usually it works.

I've got a bit of time so I thought I'd hit some campgrounds on the coast I have so far not stayed at. I'll probably spend the first night at Manchester SB, although I might pull into Armstrong Redwoods/Austin Creek depending on how late I leave. I used to spend first nights at the walk-ins at Pomo or Willow Creek, but they're closed (as are Ft Ross, Russian Gulch, Gold Beach campgrounds and several others).

Others I've never stayed at are either of the Navarro camps (one on coast, one in redwoods); Van Damme, Westport-Union Landing, Patricks Point, Humboldt Lagoons, Jedediah Smith SP, Harris Beach (OR). There are a bunch of county parks; I haven't stayed at any of those north of Stillwater Cove. I may spend some time at Mattole River; I've stayed there but just as an overnight before heading down the coast backpacking. Probably won't stay in Humboldt Redwoods; been to those camps, Salt Pt, and bunch of other ones.

So any suggestions on these let me know. Still not sure how I'm gonna get back if I go as far as OR; probably just retrace steps and head over 199 to Grants Pass, or more like back down and over 36. I like to check out the Sacto Wildlife refuges this time of year although it's so dry it's probably a bad year. Maybe stay up by Fouts or something depending on weather or just bomb home. Obviously kinda last minute.

Please! Come to Arcata! Stay until June!

If you're coming up Hwy 1, you could try this..
Just north of Ft Bragg, where 1 turns inland, stay at Usal campground then head north on the Usal Rd toward Whitethorne. Check this place out - great ocean front (no beach) camping in the heart of the lost coast. (39.943436 -123.965180).

If you want to split the difference between 199 and 36 on your way east, I know a couple of nice river side camp spots along the Trinity on 299.

Re: NorCal coast suggestions

There are a number of small campgrounds in the lost coast area.

Needle Rock is a tent campground right on the coast. There is one cabin, and if you smooth talk your way, you can convince the rangers to let you camp in your SMB. (did it)

Wailaki is a small BLM campground that is quite nice and usually deserted this time of year. Nadelos is another tent campground right next door. 40 0.993'N 123 59.957'W

Tolkan and Horse Mountain CC are a couple of small sites.

A.W. Way park is a great campground on the Mattole.

The mouth of the Mattole is another great one.
