Powderhorn Wilderness

We're headed that way via Engineer or Cimarron Pass late next week. Anyone have comments or suggestions on the area?

Re: Powderhorn Wilderness

A quick trip report though the trip was cut short by a rock puncture in Maggie Gulch, NW of Silverton, CO and a few days spent waiting outside Durango for a new spare. We started in the Zuni Mtns south of Gallup, NM (hat tip to JoeH for the lead) for some great mountain biking and some pics of the Zuni 24 Hour Race:

until we fled to Colorado in search of cool air and arrived just in time for the Weber Fire near Mancos:

.

We picked up some replacement Gorilla wheel locks after yours truly put our original lock in a safe place only to forget where that was (thanks to Nick G in Fresno for the prompt help) and headed to the Silverton area en route to the Powderhorn. As it turns out, that was a worthwhile wait.

-----------------------

A couple of days on South Mineral Creek

and a walk to Rolling Pass on the Silverton-Rico Trail

-----------------------

Next stop was Maggie Gulch, making our way towards Cinnamon Pass to cross over to the Powderhorn.

-----------------------

Flat ensued on the way out (no pics, too busy changing tire in inconvenient location) but we finally made it to the Powderhorn, considered the largest expanse of tundra in the lower 48:

Only time for one walk, then we drove out to the east along Cebolla Creek

with lots of peaks in the La Garita Wilderness beckoning from the south

and bid farewell with a piece of western Americana

Nope. We were headed for high country and cooler temps so we missed Cortez. Plus, the Weber Fire started in Mancos the day we 1st arrived in Dgo (not to be confused with our return to get a tire ) so we didn't consider heading that way.

Let me know if you make a bike trip later this summer--maybe we could join you.

Re: Powderhorn Wilderness

I'm itching to do S. Boundary trail again in your neck of the woods. Maybe in the fall when the aspens are turning. Maybe we could coordinate on a shuttle to the Angel Fire side?

That section of CO trail near Rolling Pass sure is sweet.
