I am going to have a day for my son and I to go exploring. I have a 2 WD but would like to get off the beaten path so to speak. Maybe near a river or lake? Within a two hour drive +/-. Thoughts on spots near Bellingham?
We had a great trip to Lopez Island over Thanksgiving weekend. Odlin County Park is located right on the water and should still be pretty quiet this time of year. Orcas would be good, too. Who needs a lake when you've got Puget Sound?
We're planning a trip to Port Townsend next weekend. They have great campsites on the water and great restaurants in town 10 minutes away.
From Bellingham, you can also head over to Whidbey Island fairly easily. Deception Pass, Fort Ebey/Fort Casey area is fun to explore. Since it has been warm, I wonder if Hwy 20 will be open to Lake Diablo / Ross Lake area. We are itching to explore Vancouver Island this summer and checking out the BC park system. Looking forward to seeing where you end up.
Also looking forward to sbgrimm's Port Townsend trip report.
So I ended up heading to Deception Pass. What a treat, the first visit and I already know that I will be back soon. Great shoreline! It's usual to find a long stretch of beach in the area where you could take your shoes off and enjoy a walk in the sand. Great camp ground, lots of places to back up or pull through. Even though there were a lot of camping spots within the park they did a great job at leaving a lot of the natural foliage so you feel like your the only one there. Each spot has a picnic table, fire ring and places to put down a tent. I am really looking forward to heading back and spending the night again. If anything just to enjoy the beach front!
Sounds like a good trip
We are hoping to go to Deception Pass again before the big Summer crowds arrive.
Now that Sol Duc Hot Springs is open, want to go up there and camp too. Hubby doesn't like the stinky sulfur smell and the crowds but I just love it there.
