Re: Recommendations for western Sierra

Maybe take a look at my web site

Sportsmobile 4x4 adventures

Tons of places to go up there around Edison. If your looking for a campground to base out of, Sample Meadow is OK especially if you get the last camp along the creek but there are plenty of places to be by yourselves. Mount Tom is a cool fire lookout to check out. Balloon Dome is a easy drive while Bear Diversion OHV is slightly more challenging and offers some fairly good fishing. I'd love to try my luck on the lake if I had a raft.

The Dinky Creek area is a great place to find boon docking. Bald Mountain OHV is a fun run but maybe not for a truck camper. Over by Wishon Res, Granite Gorge is an awesome run while Sawmill Flat to the Kings river is a fun way to leave out of the area even though some is paved. It goes by Black Rock Res, another place to camp and fish.

Then there is the area between highway 41 and the San Joaquin river. Fresno Dome area is nice and offers several places to camp like Big and Little Sandy or boon docking in the area. Quartz Mtn is OK and so is Iron Mtn but it's hard to beat Shuteye Peak lookout trail. They just don't let you camp too close to the lookout itself. It is a slightly challenging trail for a 4x4 pickup and camper.

Like I said there is a ton of stuff on my website. Here is the Forest service site link.

Just beware that the MVUM has been put in place and they've closed off many places which were once fantastic boon dock spots.

Have a good time

I have these maps as overlays for Google Earth. I usually change the opacity of the map to see the map and then the satellite picture to chart out the roads I want.
