Re: Dog Medical Emergency - Alert and Lessons

having a wilderness live find dog for sar I understand. Goose is good around cactus and things that bite or stick you. I always no what i have for Vet services around me and if its at a sar I make sure they have a list of vets and what they can do / have on the shelf.

Was working with FEMA and it was interesting to see how the high drive dogs that never get to run free just plowed in everything.

While this information is geared to boat cruisers there is some applicable advice here: http://www.captdrdave.com/

We bought the book and listened to his presentation through the Seven Sea U website.

Re: Dog Medical Emergency - Alert and Lessons

My dog had an altercation with the same cactus. Spines all the way thru the tounge and into the roof of his mouth. After hours of plucking he would run when he saw the needle nose plyers come out. I hit one while out on the trials motorcycle. It only got my left arm but it got it good. Those things brought me too my knees and had I know how painfull those bastards were I would have brought my dog to the vet as well. Cholla is the name of them and they are the Devil. All other cactus are warm loveable plants in comparison.

Yuck, scary story. Glad The Coop made it through okay. We saw the jumping cactus last year in JTree and I didn't push my luck with it. No dog risks on that trip for us, but a good thing to remember with kids also.

Re: Dog Medical Emergency - Alert and Lessons

I would like to use this lesson in my blog minus of course names, etc. Is that ok?

And thanks so much for that report. More reason for Presley and us to stay in the mountains.

Re: Dog Medical Emergency - Alert and Lessons

Glad Coop is doing better.

Keep us posted on the meds and such. I once asked our Vet, and they had told me of various people meds that I could use in lower doses for our dog. However, typical me didn't write it down, and I have since forgotten. But this has brought it back up and I will check this week.

I am not a techie guy, but a good idea for a new app would be a Vet finder.
