Re: Scenic drive suggestions for Sequoia to Redwoods

Good to know about the kings canyon/Sequoia. I was considering that because I will be heading to Redwoods next with more big trees.

You mentioned the high country we are coming in that way. Do I need to have chains in the van the last week of May or 1st week of June? I thought I read somewhere you could be fined if you did not have them.
Also good to know about the trailer and pizza stops that makes me feel a little better about google maps.
Thanks Again Everyone

Re: Scenic drive suggestions for Sequoia to Redwoods

Chains, yes. But to tell the truth I've never seen them actually fine a person unless they were in a chain control area driving w/o them. I've seen freak storms come through and they usually escort the vehicles that don't have them. As far as snow, the pass usually does not open until Memorial Day, sometimes earlier, sometimes later during years of high precipitation, even as late as July. The way things are going this year though my guess is for Tioga opens early even though I'd like to see heavy snow until July.

Re: Scenic drive suggestions for Sequoia to Redwoods

Just be careful around Clear Lake. We some how got lost around there going to Windsor, CA. Ended up crossing the most craziest zig zag road over to Windsor. Kids loved it, but not sure if we want to repeat that. There is also smaller but very nice Redwoods near Windsor (Armstrong Redwoods Reserve). Very close to Korbel Winery. If in the area, Coppola Winery is a must visit, there is movie memorabilia and the estate is just amazing to tour. Going again for Spring break so hope for a better road this time. Not sure if it was 175 or another road. Good luck.
