Sept 2012 Great Northern Road Trip with a Toddler

Exactly two weeks and 6,000 mile (10,000 km). Experienced everything from hot weather needing A/C to 6 inches of snow and wearing my down winter jacket.
Route Taken - Lethbridge to Edmonton, over to Grande Praire, north to Dawson Creek where the Alaska highway starts. Alaska highway to Whitehorse Yukon. From Whitehorse north to Dawson City. From Dawson City up the Dempster Highway to just about the Arctic Circle. Back to Dawson City and over the Top of the World Highway into Alaska, down to Anchorage and Seward. Back across Alaska and back into the Yukon where we caught the Cassiar Highway down to Stewart B.C. / Hyder Alaska, then across the Yellowhead highway to Jasper, then south down the Icefield Parkway down to Banff then home.

I decided to fly my wife and 20 month old daughter to Whitehorse while i make the 30 hour two day trip up to meet them, thought it'd be better to save them the time in the van and get up there quick to start the trip fresh in the north. I was trying to meet their plane and only made it to Whitehorse with an hour to spare, so many of the pictures are from out the from window while driving, i wish it wasn't so but was my only choice for the time i had so please forgive the windshield streaks.

The below pictures are from Dawson Creek to Whitehorse. I'll post the others as i get them organized.

That is a lot of miles in two weeks. I'll bet you could take the same trip in 8 weeks and not be able to see everything you want to see.

Always spectacular scenery in far North.

Beautiful pics! Thanks for sharing. It's on my bucket list but probably won't be achieved til retirement, mostly because I'm in Tn.
We did 6000 miles in 2 weeks (well, 16 days) this summer in the Southwest with 2 young children. Quite a lot of miles, but still had a great trip. No one was miserable until were 2 days from home. Great idea to fly them in and save them for the best part!

Going north to Dawson City, via the Klondike Hwy.

Dempster Hwy

On our way back south on the Dempster

The Dempster seems to have muted your two tone paint job!

From the pictures, it looks the road is basically a single track, but wide enough to allow two trucks to pull over and pass. The snow is beautiful.

Thanks for sharing.

So what was the total altitude change between the river road and the snow road?

(Awesome Pictures by the way!)

Your right! The entire trip i was wishing i could go check out a random road, or stop and relax at a river or lake. There is so much more to see. I'll make it up again someday and spend more time exploring instead of driving past everything.

Ya being in TN would make it a very long trip, at least during retirement you won't be in hurry. I'd like to do it again then as well. Ya the flight was only 2 1/2 hours compared to 30 hrs in a car seat

Im not sure exactly, def a couple thousand feet, i should have been watching the GPS. The highest point on the dempster is 4200 ft. Which isn't super high, but just enough apparently.
