Short SW Colorado/SE Utah jaunt

My wife and I took a short trip to SW CO and SE UT at the first of October...we planned on 10 days so we could take a few of the notorious Utah 4x4 paths through Natl. parks and BLM land...we were going to rockhound ( a new hobby for us) at the Geode Flats starting around Sugarville N through to the Dugway area...but RAIN made us head back to IA earlier than planned. Here's our path... after iowa to Denver, we headed S on 285 to Salida...then on S to Monte Vista, W on 160 past Durango NW on 491 E of Canyons of the Ancients, then 191 towards Canyonlands. We took the BLM camp option right before Canyonlands starts...agreat little 4x4 path that has one campsite(away form the other sites)...It started to rain around 11pm, and didn't stop!By the morning we figured we better head out before our campsite was separated by the dry creek, (now stating to rise) we had to cross to get to our campsite... as we left the park and got reception, we checked radar (Myweatherradar.com, I think, BEST way to check weather, you'll see why if you download) and saw no relief as storms were littering the radar! We made the call to head back home. We went south and traveled S through NM by Shiprock before heading back N through Co...At least we had a few GREAT nights in Sporty and got to get away! On the way back we found a great gravel road with exceptional boondocking! In NM HWY 64/84 N on 17 by Chama then left/North up through Platoro and then to Summerville hooking up to 160 again...can't wait to get back out there...anywhere in our SMB!! Here's some of the better shots!

Re: Short SW Colorado/SE Utah jaunt

OP,

I know you said your original intent was to go to well known 4x4 paths, but it sounds like you were unable to do that due to the rain. Would you say the rest of the trip was 2wd accessible? I am most curious about the road condition between 160 and your boondocking spot near the Platoro Resevoir, as well as the access to the BLM campgrounds near Canyonlands, the BLM map shows a lot of campgrounds near the natl park so I am thinking if Superbowl was not 2wd friendly (Google Earth seems to show it as a pretty reasonable road, but that may not be the case) maybe there are some other BLM CG's that are a little more accessible.

I would love to put together a 5-8 day loop trip from Denver -> Arches/Canyonlands -> Pagosa(family) -> boondock->Denver. Based on what you saw out there, is that pretty doable on a 2wd?

Thanks for any input!
