We had a great time at the Hungry Valley Meet & Greet and are looking forward to the next one! Anza-Borrego is a great option for the next event.
We attended last year’s Annual Peg Leg Smith Liars’ Contest held on the first Saturday in April at the Peg Leg Smith Monument in Borrego Springs located about 90 miles north-east of San Diego.
On our way out of the park, we followed up with an off road exploration of amazing metal animal sculptures. The sculptures are constructed of welded sheet metal, reinforcement bar, and wire by sculptor Ricardo Breceda of Parris, California. Dennis Avery, a Borrego Springs town benefactor, commissioned these pieces and had them placed on his private land, Galleta Meadows, along Borrego Springs Road at the north and south ends of town. If you are sorry you missed them during prior visits to Anza-Borrego, the first were just installed in 2008.

We did not get to see all the sculptures as we almost got stuck in the soft sand and decided to return for the rest at another another visit as it was Easter Sunday and were concerned about rescue.
There is a totally free, totally no trash, no water, no utilities site at the Peg Leg Smith Monument where the snow birds from Canada and full time boon dockers hang out in Borrego’s Springs during the winter. There are no reservations and not much in the way of rules except behave your selves. It would be an easy place to circle the wagons for a SMB Meet. We are definitely planning to return to further explore Borrego Springs!
