SoCal to NorCal

Gonna take my first trip in the smb this weekend. Gonna head up pch from SoCal. Probably as far as San Francisco. Any suggestions on which route to take or places to stop? I didn't plan ahead and make any reservations so are there places off the beaten path that I can stop and setup camp for the night?

Plenty of boondocking spots north of Gorda in Los Padres NF. But keep in mind PCH is closed in several spots.

[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM RAGGED POINT (SAN LUIS OBISPO CO) TO GORDA (MONTEREY CO) - DUE TO MUDSLIDE REMOVAL - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE - MOTORISTS CAN ACCESS SR 1 FROM GORDA TO LIMEKILN STATE PARK BY USING NACIMIENTO-FERGUSON RD

IS CLOSED FROM LIMEKILN CREEK BRIDGE TO 0.5 MI SOUTH OF BIG SUR STATE PARK /IN BIG SUR/ (MONTEREY CO) - DUE TO MUDSLIDE REMOVAL & BRIDGE REPLACEMENT - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

I was there 2 weeks ago, took Nacimiento Jefferson exit, then took dirt road that started within the army base up to 3200 feet to camp overlooking the Pacific.

I came down to PCH from the camp spot where the TreeBones Resort entrance is.

Spent an entire day horsing around from Gorda to Limekiln campground more or less by myself. It's such a beautiful stretch.

So that's where your new fuel taxes will be going to.

Tienckb - how long is the trip to get over the mountain from Fort Hunter to the coast? What's the condition of the dirt road?

My buddy and I spent about 3-4 hours cruising the dirt road winding up to our camp spot. Condition was perfect. No need to be in 4wd. We did in 2wd with the exception of a few segments that needed 2wd lo.

Be sure to have plenty of fuel. The only gas station on PCH in Gorda at $6 per gallon as of yesterday I believe has been cut off due to another land slide.

Other than that enjoy!!!

Also, free overnight camping is permitted along the Nacimiento road beginning about 11 miles to PCH.
