Any idahoans out there with advice?

heise is actually an established natural hotspring resort. water slide, pool, pizza, golf, etc. east of heise is a really neat area, but its crowded without the eclipse. its the nearest camping to Idaho falls and its atv/utv friendly with trails all over the place. plus its right on the southfork of the snake which is prime fishing all year long. if your going to be in that area, you might be better off hitting 33 between Rexburg and driggs and finding a random road south to the centerline. honestly, from the sounds of things, its going to be a Charlie foxtrot no matter where you go, so where ever you decide to head, best get there ahead of the crowds to establish a spot.

We are about 45 north of the main event. Planning on staying home. The state is predicting doom and gloom traffic. Hope that does not happen and that all goes smoothly for everyone.

I'm departing San Diego tomorrow to join one of my college roommates who secured three campsites a few days ago at Magone Lake Campground north of John Day. Now only if we can get there through the hordes. I hope to get there Friday afternoon and will probably stay a day after to let the crowds disperse. I would like to head west and see the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

that's lots of driving for a 2 minute event unless you got a few other things planned...
theres another eclipse in 2024. looks like its path will be going through texas. maybe you can catch that one?

Yes, but two very memorable minutes. I was a total eclipse in HI in 1991 and it was spectacular! And yes, I do plan on taking the long way home to see more nature and geology.

"Approximately once every 18 months (on average) a total solar eclipse is visible from some place on the Earth’s surface."
This makes me feel better!

Well, if this isn't a prepared group of people, I don't know what is. How many other travelers can just pull over to the side of the road and hunker down for the duration?
Tho I did see a warning from the Oregon DOT, warning people against doing that. "We'll be ticketing" or some such thing. Well, I'm about to test that theory, cause my plan is to just drive down a few miles and pull over. Think I'll get a ticket? I more fear getting stuck in some bizarre traffic jam on the little used back roads I plan to take. Who knows, though? Could be me and 10,000 other Portlanders deciding to hop in the rig at 0400 and drive down the road!
Now if I could just find those damn eclipse glasses I bought two months ago, being the prepared Oregonian that I am...
