Trip Report Cleghorn to Lake Arrowhead
Last weekend was dedicated to offroading and we were able to run both the Main Divide Truck Trail in Orange County and Cleghorn to Lake Arrowhead in two separate day trips.
I highly recommend the Cleghorn run for local Southern Californians looking to get in super fun local dirt time. Access to this route is easy since the trail head and staging area are a dedicated exit (Cleghorn Road) from the 15 fwy near the 215 and Cajon Pass. This is another service road that can be made as hard as you desire with several offshoots and parallel trails that challenge even the best 4wd drivers and vehicles. The main route was rather rough this time since the recent heavy rains left deep ruts and exposed rocks in the road that required some spirited driving to keep all 4 wheels on the ground. The Cleghorn portion of the trip is about 20 miles and has a fair amount of traffic from the local OHV use areas.
We like to connect the Cleghorn run to the Pilot Rock Truck Trail (2N33) that picks up of the east side of Silverwood Lake. This route is about 10 miles and wraps up to Pilot Rock and dumps back out to Hwy 173. We took 173 south to Lake Arrowhead for some dinner on our way home.
Average speed for this trip was just shy of 14 mph due to the road conditions and took about 3 hours with a couple of short breaks. This is another route I would be happy to do again if anyone was interested.
