TWOLOST: Sugarloaf Peak (trip report)

My wife and I were able to get away for a few hours this past weekend... so we quickly packed the van on Saturday morning and then headed east in search of Fall colors and a drier climate. We drove over Snoqualmie Pass (from west to east) in an absolute down-pour. The eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range was mostly dry (as usual). We then drove north over Blewett Pass and then up into the surrounding hills north of Leavenworth via a patchwork of forest service roads. Ulimately, we ended up at the base of the Sugarloaf Peak fire lookout (5700 ft elevation), where we spent the night boonedocking. We needed to be back home by late after noon on Sunday and as such we were up early and back on the road - retracing our steps back home. Here is a quick visual...

Road: NF-7520

Campsite: Sugarloaf Peak - Foggy, low 50's (F), sustained winds 15mph with gusts to 30mph.

View from campsite - (when breaks in the fog would allow it)

Conditions started to deteriorate - temps dropped, winds picked-up another 10+ mph (we lowered the roof to keep if from blowing off) and heavy fog would continue to sweep in and out.

Ice - woke in the morning to find the everything outside had frozen. We had the heater on all night and were just fine inside the van. Winds had died dow slightly by this time but the fog was unrelenting.

Fall colors - at lower elevation.

Old Blewett Highway - As we were underway so early on Sunday morning, we were able to spend a litte more time and travel up the Old Blewett Highway (11 miles of what was once a highway... and is now more of a 10mph deteriorating private driveway).

Overall, it was much too short of a trip... but far better than working!!

Cheers,
---TWOLOST---

Beautiful pictures. The frost looked so real, I could feel the cold. Thank you for sharing.

Those are great pictures, as usual. Thanks for the report.

We're going to head up to the Leavenworth/Wenatchee area in a few weeks to get a big load of apple's for apple sauce and the like. I think I know where we'll be camping.

Ageed. Before we decided to go the Sportsmobile route... we first had to decide what type of travel made the most sense for us (pack everthing we owned and attempt to live in the lap of luxury - at the cost of girth and mobility.... to packing very little, maintaining mobility, and gaining trip frequency). As none of the options we looked at were really all that cheap, we decided to go for the option that increased the likelyhood of us actually using our chosen vehicle (rather than simply storing it).

We can go from a spontaneous idea to actually clicking off miles in about an hour (and we are slow). We can arrive at a destination, setup camp, and then simply decide to move somewhere else 30 minutes later. We dont require reservations and there are very few roads/paths where our curiosity does not get satisfied. At least for now, when we are traveling... we enjoy traveling most every day, we use the daylight hours for exploration, and then we set-up a minimal camp at some random location at days end. This process starts all over again early the next day. The longest amount of time we have ever stayed in one place was three days... and that may have been one day too long. To simplify our operation even further, we did not opt for a stove or full service bathroom. Our trade-off is that we stay in a time share, hotel, B&B, full service campground, or the like... every second or third day we are traveling. This certainly increases our travel costs... but it keeps us relatively light weight while still delivering a level of comfort that keeps it fun for both of us.

Thanks all,
---TWOLOST---
