We are at Great Sand Dunes NP today, heading to Leadville to check it out tonight. Denver tomorrow, then Boulder tomorrow night. Loveland on Sunday/Monday.
Awesome theee day stay at Telluride skiing all over the mountain. Our friends have lived in T-ride for 40 years and showed us such a great time. Tree skied the "only known to locals" runs. Snow in the trees was awesome, bit windswept on the open faces. Town has it dialed in (except for camping in your rig). That was a challenge but we made it work. Galloping Goose free shuttle drops off right at the Gondola and runs every 10 mins. Cute place!
Left T-ride on Sunday morning (unfortunately) with it snowing big flakes all night before and into the morning. Monday /Tuesday would have been really good!
Pulled into Taos parking lot at midnight. Taos is one of the few spots that allows camping right in the lot. The snow conditions were lots of coverage but nothing new in a better than a week, warming days and freezing nights. Sunday night and Monday morning brought 6" of new snow, so it was a bit better. Monday was good, Tuesday was cold, bit of snow, and windy, so we skipped that day. Wednesday was a beautiful day and getting started around 11am gave the snow a chance to soften up. Except for a scary on my back head first 50+ yard-sale slide down a steep tree lined run, it was a nice day. Still do not know how Indid not hit anything!
During our Taos stay we met forum members Nate and Jessica - Conumdrum - who were also camping in the parking lot in their nice fixed top EB Sportsmobile. Thanks for the beer and time chatting about skiing, camping and vans! Great people and we hope to connect up with them again soon!
Left Taos yesterday morning after a really yummy breakfast at Michael's Kitchen! Highly recommend that place, as well as Orlando's for dinner. It had been 22 yrs since we were last in Taos. Lots of growth in town and a new owner of the ski mountain should mean even more changes.
Drive up to Great Sand Dunes NP was nice. Arrived at Zapata Falls campground, did the short hike up to see the frozen falls and then back to Beastie where we were the only ones until 12:30 am when an SUV pulled in looking for a spot.
Will check out Sand Dunes more closely today then mosey up to Leadville. Having a blast, very appreciative of being able to do this.
