Utah in November, recommendations requested

All,

We will be taking the kids out of school for a Utah trip in November.

Yes, we have tested the diesel heater and it works

As I pull out the maps and books, it seems like we could be blocked in several areas by snow given the time of year.

I am tentatively looking at either an Eastern Utah circuit or a Western Utah circuit but it looks like it would be too much to fit both into one trip.

The East circuit would be a clockwise swing from SLC to Arches, Canyonlands and Monument Valley and back up to SLC.

The West circuit would be SLC, Zion, Bryce, Escalante and back up to SLC.
In either case, we have 7 days in Utah.

Do those of you that travel Utah frequently have advice or recommendations for us? Yes, I'll have snow chains before we leave.

Thanks.

Bitburger

Bit,

I travel Utah often, and either route you choose will be wonderful. I can't pick for you, but including Zion means a more confined and manageable amount of geography, which might make travel with kids easier. Maybe not? You can't go wrong either way.

CJ,

I picked up a booked off amazon,
Backcountry Adventures Utah: The Ultimate Guide to the Utah Backcountry for Anyone with a Sport Utility Vehicle (Backcountry Adventures) (Paperback)

It seems quite thorough and gives great descriptions of the sites, history and trails.

I'll send out a trip report when we return. It sounds like it will be prior to your trip.

Bittburger, take those chains! We've hit snow or freezing fog in the Blue Mountains above Pendleton, OR, in November, and as you know, SLC is higher than the pass in the Blues. Snowville, UT, just over the border from Idaho on I-84, didn't get its name because the ranchers were wishing for snow...

Last winter my wife, dog and I did southern utah in our SMB. We did the Sedona, AZ, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion. We found the Grand Canyon to be too far out of the way as it took too much time away from southern Utah, which is amazingly beautiful. Zion is particularly stunning.

Highway 12 going east from Bryce Canyon is very worthy. We made it out to Escalante but had to turn back due to time constraints. We plan to go out again this winter but we want to make it all the way out to Fruita. Or perhaps we will do northern New Mexico...who knows?

UPDATE: oops, i see from your other post that this is all too late.

I agree that Highway 12 is a must.
