If you are a paper map person, suggest you pick up the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer for Nevada. I just ordered New Mexico via Amazon Prime yesterday to add to the collection, less than $20 delivered. We always carry these when we travel, lots of good easy-to-access information.

You can just show up. But, you may not be able to get a camp site unless someone is willing to double up. And you won't get a SMB T-shirt, since they have to be ordered in advance. Several people who are going are willing to share a site. The sooner you get there in the day, the more likely a site will be available.
