VivaLaVida in NW Georgia (update 12/20/13)

Still waiting on the administration to deliver my Georgian driver license, I'm actually discovering Appalachians in North-West Georgia since three days.

The two first were sunny and I enjoyed some nice places.

I leaved Lake Lanier in a cold morning...

I spent the first night in Tallulha River campground, about three miles downstream frome Tate City. A nice primitive campground just next to the river (34.92643, -83.54255).

They are two other campgrounds upstream of that one, Tate Branch campground (34.95525, -83.55221) and Sandy Bottom campground (34.96320, -83.55900), also next to the river but closed for the season. Tate City is a retired beautiful and quiet place.

Then I crossed the river to drive a 4WD road along Flat Branch Creek. The ford was about one and a half feet deep and 50 yard long since it doesn't just cross the river but go upstream of it. The beginig of the road wasn't very difficult and I saw many nice boondocking places along (34, 95488, -83.56811), (34.95839, -83.57140).

After about three miles, the road had some washed out places where VivaLaVida could proove his capability!

First axle crossing

Steep section

Real axle crossing... ;-)

Even in that position, no need to lock differentials. Rear axle travel is so impressive that three wheels were still on the ground!

I then went to the Brasstown Bald, the highest point of Georgia. Short hike to the summit to enjoy the gorgeous sighting.

Nice river on the way to Brasstown Bald

An interested guy...

I then visited some waterfalls.

Dukes Creek Falls (34.70204, -8379129)
  • [list:2pn9dfie][list:2pn9dfie][list:2pn9dfie]
[/list:u:2pn9dfie][/list:u:2pn9dfie][/list:u:2pn9dfie]

Horse Trough Falls, in Upper Chattahoogee River (34.79218, -83.78754)
  • [list:2pn9dfie]
[/list:u:2pn9dfie]

All the Upper Chattahoogee River area is definitely beautiful. I drove some nice forest roads and found a nice boondocking place along 44B (34.77681, -83.80370).

  • [list:2pn9dfie]
[/list:u:2pn9dfie]

The rain came down all the night and the trail was quite mudy in the morning, even with a falling tree I had to cut. Some steep downhills where really slipery and sceary but I aired down VivaLaVida and go through without problem.

That's it for now, I will continue that thread later. Hope it will motivate some of you to come discovering that definitely beautiful region!

Re: VivaLaVida in North-West Georgia

Claude, are those icy roadside shots on the way up to Clingman's Dome? I have taken practically that same shot on the road up to Clingman's Dome, and that ice hangs around there all winter.
Just curious.

Re: VivaLaVida in North-West Georgia

Loved the pictures! Liked the trip report too but great pictures. I need to travel and see some of the sights in the East. Your pictures make me want to explore a little further from home!

Thanks for sharing!
