WA Overland Rally

Full Event Coverage: http://www.exploringelements.com/eve...nd-rally-2012/

Such a great event. A few big vans in attendance, but wished more of you had come!

See you on the road,
Bryon

Re: WA Overland Rally

What an absolutely horrible recovery. Maybe the circumstances dictated the way they did it, but you are so right that was "not pretty."

They really needed an anchor point far more orthogonal to the direction of travel (Pull Pal and pulley block would have made a big difference), and they should have gone far slower. Very lucky the rig didn't flop on it's side. Even going forward rather than backward could have helped.

Re: WA Overland Rally

I'll have to admit I wasn't there and I really can't see the terrain, but it looks like he could have driven down to more level ground, backed up and driven forward up onto the road.

I was expecting to see the van on it's side any second.

Re: WA Overland Rally

I know it's kinda hard to tell in pictures but I was told to be careful around 30* tilt and have an Inclinometer set to sound at 28*....I think it would have been going off in that situation.

Re: WA Overland Rally

For sure sketchy as hell and thought I was going to roll at any moment. I think we did well for what we had. Driving further forward was not a good option and my rig desperatly needs recovery points on the front (working on that soon!). I also had very limited manuverability as both axels were resting on the edge of the road. We could have gone slower backwards, but I'm not sure we would have yanked it out of the ditch with the much lighter Defender if we had. Happy to report that somehow nothing broke during the recovery

Please check out the story, photos and video here for more info:

I'm for sure still learning a ton about this overlanding and 4x4 thing. I appreciate all advice and tips and only head out on the trail with experienced people and rigs with plenty of recovery gear. Still outfitting my rig to handle rougher off-road adventures.
