Re: Westward ho! Pennsylvania to Colo, Wyo, Mont, Alberta

Sounds like a great trip! Be safe....Tropical Storm Bill is upon us and here to stay through the weekend. Hopefully you will drive out of it tomorrow. We are headed out west in a couple of weeks. We will travel through Colorado on our way to the Grand Canyon, but that won't be until late the first week of July. Sorry we won't cross paths on this trip.

Sounds like a fantastic trip. I'll gladly shoot you some suggestions for waterton to banff/jasper. Just in kalispell now so will spend some time with suggestions as soon as I get back. Going to the sun road just opened today.

Westward ho! Pennsylvania to Colo, Wyo, Mont, Alberta

Haven't updated in quite a while. I'll post more and pics I'm a day or two, but we changed plans and are now in California. Spent most of last week In Colorado, including Pueblo, St Elmo ghost town, Maroon Bells near Aspen for two nights, then Rocky Mtn Nat Park for two nights.

The plan was to head up to Yellowstone and points north, but when we stopped in Cheyenne, Wyo., (Sierra Trading Post! Yeah!) we looked at I80 heading west and made a spur of the moment decision to drive to the coast and visit family and friends.
Sunday saw us driving 18 hours and 970 miles from Evanston, Wyo., to Fresno, Calif., where our friends live. Today we head to Carmel, Calif., to spend a few days with my sister in law.

After this week we will have two weeks to head home. Not sure what route, although I think we may hit Yellowstone and then drive back the northern tier states.

You ran into some nice weather in Fresno, eh? I heard that the coast is even going to be toasty the next couple of days.
Carmel and Big Sur are nice areas though...enjoy.

Yeah, Fresno was a bit toasty at about 100. Drove today to Carmel and am sitting on my sister in law's back deck and it's about 65 degrees. Crazy!

Went to SMB-W yesterday, which was cool. Serious SMB envy!

We're in Carmel until Sunday morning. Need to decide our route home still. Wouldn't be in Yellowstone before next week if we go.

Catching up with back-dated posts and pics. Most will be copied from my Facebook posts so may occasionally be in present tense.

Saturday, June 20: Overnighted in a motel in Indiana just west of Louisville, Ky., with the plan to let Tropical Storm Bill pass by overnight. It mostly worked. We drove through heavy rain for maybe an hour, but clear skies were ahead of us soon. Coincidentally stopped at a rest area where my wife and I had lunch 21 years ago on our drive to Alaska! Who puts a rest area on "Skeeter Mountain"?

Sat., June 20, cont.

Across the Mississippi! Gateway Arch and great BBQ at a hole-in-the-wall place in St. Louis (Smoki O's BBQ). The area all around the Arch is under heavy construction and is a mess. If you are traveling through I suggest not stopping to see it this year. Looks like it will be nice when finished, though.
