Re: What are your 3 top criteria for smb destination plannin

Here's mine:

1) roads I'm comfortable traveling. I have wife, infant and toddler to be considerate of so when they're in tow I'm less risk adverse. Also, I don't know what the hell I'm doing half the time
2) Water features (lake, stream, river, ocean, waterfall, snow etc).
2) Potential activities at destination (snowboard, hike, fish, swim etc).

1. I like to pick obscure places off the map and find roads I've never driven before. I'm pushing 70 with no kids, so I've got a lot less to lose. I like to push the envelope a bit.

2. Seclusion and solitude. Even at a big feature like Grand Canyon, I prefer the wilderness spots like Kanab Point and Point Sublime.

3. Weather/season has a bit to do with it. North in the summer, South in the winter. Up the mountain when it's hot; head for the valley when a storm's coming in.

1) Someplace I have not been to before

2) Either a beautiful place or something unique to see

4) Away from people -- that's why I have a Sportsmobile.

I'm with you Mac, or at least, near you but out of sight of you.

Re: What are your 3 top criteria for smb destination planni

1. Choosing an interesting route. What I mean is we usually don't have a destination that we setup and camp for days. We take a more nomadic approach to our overlanding and thereby make the route more important than a specific destination. To that I add the following criteria.

2. To find a location or region that has some historical, cultural, geological, or geographical significance.

3. When possible, To go boldly where no man has gone before ... er I mean where no one else is. Yes we usually travel alone, and thereby increase our risk factor. We do quite a bit of pre-planning and vehicle maintenance to reduce risks.

1. Scenery. New to me or not. Many sights, including Nat'l Parks have multiple visits.

or 2. Meetups. Enjoy meetings with family (including SMB4um family) and friends.

or 3. To go to the end of the road or trail. Key West, Labrador, Deadhorse or Toroweap

Too many variables for me.
Local trips for me are usually a very different animal.

On a local trip that I return to frequently:
1) A scenic spot that never reaches over 85* well maybe.
2) Camping far away enough from others so I can run my engine.
3) Limited drive times.

On a road trip:
1) Visiting unique & scenic spots.
2) Off road access to trails when possible.
3) Weather

Off road adventures:
1) Weather.
2) Unique remote and scenic campsites.
3) Scenic and interesting trails.

Many times road trips, off road adventures and return visits to local areas can rolled into one. A road trip to a frequently visited spot where a base camp is established to do exploring the back country on 4x4 trails during my visit is an example.

1) It's on my bucket list
2) Weather permits safe arrival and stay
3) I can't take leave from my job

Why's it on my bucket list?
1) Never been there
2) Wonder of the world
3) Peaceful and fun place to be
