Hi thanks for all the info! My battery is about 10ft away from the compressor. I just ordered 10guage wire to replace the 14 I had issues with. I can the compressor on and off as the tank filled for about an hour to get my tires filled up. Do you guys think the tank will fill faster w the thicker gauge wires? 10 Guage is rated to 30amp and the compressor is max draw of 20. Hopefully I should be good.

Thanks for all the replies.

Get a relay as already suggested to lower the drop. Pay close attention to the connections. Voltage will drop with distance as well as wire temperature heat (increased wire resistance). Lower voltage will increase motor winding current. That will increase motor winding heat and can ultimately burn it out. Look at the duty cycle Minutes On/Off (@72ºF & 100 PSI): 18 On / 42 Off,Continuous Use (@72ºF & 40 PSI): 40 Minutes
Heat is the reason they specify duty cycle. You haven't stated your tank pressure, but it appears you would be stressing the motor.

And yes, the tank will fill faster with more voltage, but it is a ratio. You can run a pump up tank engine running and battery only engine off test and time it if curious.........Running an electric motor with reduced voltage is the most common reason they burn out.....I once had a smaller knock off viar compressor that burned out due to the supplied leads being too small with a resulting voltage drop ~2v...(and maybe it was a knock off as well)....The other thing you are stressing is the alternator diodes...In baja heat I also melted two alternator diodes airing up 2 vehicles at one go (130A Motocraft alternator @ 89K miles) even though the compressor should have been drawing less than 40A...If the viar is exposed to cooling air while driving that is a good thing, with the converse, a hot still area.

You need a relay. Personally I'd run 10-6awg OFC on stuff thats going to "run" things. You can use CCA for charge lines because they rarely draw over 20amp.
