Re: aluminess tire/galley box

First thing I did upon ownership was to open the two holes just a bit to be able to put a nice padlock through. It engages from the bottom leaving the key end of the lock facing up, so I cover it with a black plastic hitch ball cover to keep water and grit out. The added security is nice since I carry a lot of valuable gear and this prevents rear entry. While I'm driving short distances or around town, I use the lock pin shown below for convenience, easy in and out. I'd never trust those weenie clasps that Aluminess uses to hold the two swingarms secure.

Re: aluminess tire/galley box

Aluminess suggested to me that a good tight fitting pin will help strengthen the whole structure. I'm using a hitch pin with a lanyard on it and feel comfortable with it. Only once did the gate swing open...after the car wash it didn't get fully closed . I try not to use a pad lock. It could get crude into it making it difficult to get off. Most people don't even know how to get them open anyway. But parked somewhere a lock might be a very good idea

Re: aluminess tire/galley box

I use a pin from Home Depot. It gives me a little peace of mind and I always have a pin handy for the arm lock too. I also carry extras.

Steve, I don't understand what your image is depicting. Looks like you replaced a bolt with a lock pin. I don't see the two tabs of the swing arms together.

The newer Aluminess have a second hole on the lower hinge and matching hole in the bumper, s.t. when open you can drop a pin in and it will stay open.
