Re: DIY Aluminum Underfloor Storage
Man, considering how well you are doing on the sub floor box, ever think about the rear bumper box? I would think many members might jump on it. Nice work!

Re: DIY Aluminum Underfloor Storage
I'll take one, standard dimensions except only a 28" wide opening (centered) due to my rear seats, with a 1" flange. I'll pick it up.
I don't need a lid, I think plywood with glued-on carpet is the best for me. I can't have a hinge since it needs to be opened from either side, and without a hinge that means I'll inevitably leave it somewhere. Plus, it'll make a nice work pad if I need to fix something under the van. And maybe I'll stick some folding legs on it too.
I've been itching for a compartment for a while now, so I'm ready when your are.

Re: DIY Aluminum Underfloor Storage
I need to measure my van, since I have an RB the width available may be quite different but if we can make it work, Ill take one. Thanks for doing this.

Let me know what you find out. I might have an rb that I could take a look at tomorrow morning to figure out what layout is needed.

Re: DIY Aluminum Underfloor Storage
What's involved in mounting the box? The tire support needs to be cut away; a hole cut through the floor... how is the box supported? How much work is involved, would you say?
Thanks!
Mike.

Hey Mike,
I'll try to post my version of mounting the box this weekend. Basically cut or torch the tire carrier out. I drilled and punched my rivets but plasma or sawsall works as well. Lift the box in place to determine hole location. Cut floor hole with sawsall, plasma, or angle grinder with cutoff wheel (easy to cut straight). Lift box into final location, clamp, and drill holes near port and starboard edges and bolt in place with gasket material around rim.

Dang! That's some nice fab/welding work. I play in assembly language all day, its refreshing to see a "real" skill.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing it done. I'll see if it matches my skillset - sounds pretty straightforward on paper!
Cheers,
Mike.

DIY Aluminum Underfloor Storage
I'll take one also. Hopefully a rack also! I'm local and will pickup. I like carpeted plywood lid also.
