DIY Rear Awning

I have been in the market for a rear awning solution. I tried the smaller Fiamma, and it was way to wide to mount on the rear. The reason I want a rear awning is for those summer days that you can only go to the closest beach for a day. Unfortunately, most beaches around here have narrow parking spots, un-abling us to deploy our side awning. So I thought of a solution for a rear awning using recycled items. Here they are:

1. an old tent footprint. (as the awning)

2. old tent poles (4 poles, had to cut some to size)

3. bungee hooks x2

4. adjustable cords x2 (had to buy these. $5 for the pair)

Since we do not use the outdoor shower curtain, I used it as my mounting system for the awning. I just mirrored the passenger mount to the driver-side mount.

Awning deployed! PH Down.

PH Up!

All packed up...

Cheers, Ray

Re: DIY Rear Awning

I agree, a very nice awning solution, especially for walking through the back.

Very impressive and creative. In some of your photos, you have the shock cords connected to the rack on top of your PH. However, in others, the PH is up and it appears the shock cords are going somewhere else? The wheel wells?

Re: DIY Rear Awning

SD,

Sorry, I totally flaked on the explanation when the PH is up. I attached the cord to the loops on the side of the PH. (Loops for the the bungee that goes around the PH)

Steve,

You are correct! It works great with any floor plan with an aisle. I think I have some pics backed in at Seal Beach Pier with the awning.

Re: DIY Rear Awning

That was a very slick setup! How stable is it in the wind? I saw a van from Australia something like a Dodge Mini Van where the rear door lifts up. Anyway, they had a system something like what you did but what theirs did was enclose & enlarge their sleeping area by extending a plywood sheet out & attaching canvas. They snapped sides in place to the raised door, along the body door frame & plywood. It enclosed that complete area.

Re: DIY Rear Awning

Thanks for the kind words!

Sam,

The awning is very stable on windy days. The tent poles and the tension strings totally help out. We were in our local beach yesterday, with strong winds, and it did fine.
